The thing that makes De La Hoya hard to judge is most of the big names he beat were either past their prime or over their best weight. Oscar fought at a false-weight for the purpost of racking up victories over "bigger name" fighters who were just too petite to deal with him, such as Troy Dorsey, Jeff Mayweather, Jorge Paez, and Jessie James Leija, & John John Molina, who was physically past his best.

He may have wins over Julio Caesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker; but both were past their best (34 & 33 respectively), to say nothing of Hector Camacho who was past his best age and weight...and who had previously lost to Felix Trinidad, as had Oba Carr and Fernando Vargas.

Out of his biggest fights against fighters into or close to their primes and natural weights: Rafael Ruelas, Ike Quartey, Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley, & Fernando Vargas....what is his record and how clear cut is it?

Just some thoughts. I'm not dissing Oscar, for he was a fantastic talent and fighter; but those discrepancies don't help him IMO.

Adding to that, Oscar was never a DOMINANT fighter, IMO. His biggest wins were oftentimes never clear, written-in-stone victories. Not saying he didn't beat the prime fighters he went up against, but since we are speaking of greatness here, it should be noted that he squeaked out some wins and even lost to the greatest of the opponents that he fought.
