Gene Tunney was great. But i think that referee was in love with Gene a bit. He must have been a member of the Tunney fanclub.

I think the ref really wasn't trying to purposely let the count go long. It seemed like he was more concerned about Tunney's safety while he was down... when Dempsey looked like he was sharking around him. I think the ref felt Dempsey would hit Tunney illegally and was more concerned about instructing him to go to the neutral corner. I'd say that's where the five seconds go.

And I also don't see the controversy if the neutral corner rule was invented around that time. I suppose refs really didn't use it or something and by that I mean the count starts when the other fighter is in the neutral corner.

That was a mental error however, in him not instructing Tunney to the neutral corner, thus making this look very su****ious.

Dempsey broke the rules and paid the price. Tunney wasn't that great. He practiced running backwards for miles throwing the jab. How great is that?

The referee played it perfect, if Dempsey would have gone to the neutral corner the count would not have been interupted. The neutral corner rule was brought into play shortly before this fight and the bout was contested under the understanding that in the event of a knockdown the fighter standing must go to a neutral corner. Case closed.............Rockin'

I don't get it. The count can not begin until the standing fighter moves to the opposite corner. After this had happenned, the count took roughly ten seconds. Thus, it seemed to me the count was correct. Am I wrong?

Yeah but I guess the controversy stems from the ref not instructing Tunney to the neutral corner when he knocked Dempsey down. Since the contra happened to Tunney right before.

that's because Dempsey also faught when before fighters didn't need to go to a neutral corner after a knock down hence the bad beating he gave to Willard. He forgot that and paid for it. It was a fair call by the ref
