Peter Next for Oleg?
By Matt Richardson
Although Samuel Peter won his rematch against James Toney last night, his position as the WBC heavyweight mandatory challenger to champion Oleg Maskaev may be circumvented for the time being. This is because Maskaev and his team are still attempting to salvage a unification bout with IBF Champion Wladimir Klitschko in Moscow for an April 21st date (HBO would televise). Maskaev promoter Dennis Rappaport recently sent a letter to WBC President Jose Sulaiman in an attempt to plead their case for heavyweight unification and (for the time being) delay the mandatory defense against Peter. "The WBC has a rule that if a unification fight comes up that it would take priority over a mandatory," Rappaport explained to *********. "The WBC has to realize its for the improvement of boxing. There are two roads; how much longer is boxing going to take the wrong one? The (fight against Klitschko) still has a lot of potential," Rappaport continued. "Boxing is deconstructing and it's really important to clear up the chaos and confusion," the promoter said. "The WBC is going to make a decision," Rappaport said. "I think it's in the hands of Sulaiman; the reality is that his rules give him priority." The WBC is expected to make a decision sometime this week. Stay tuned...
