    Rumor: Erik Morales in Manila?

Word is circulating that Erik Morales arrived without fanfare at the Manila International Airport the other night (Manila Time).

    How true is this?

What's he doing in Manila? As Pacquiao's guest?

There were earlier reports that he had been contracted for San Miguel Beer ads alongside Pacquiao. If this is the reason for his visit to the Philippines, one wonders why there is secrecy surrounding his arrival. One would have thought that San Miguel will trumpet such an occassion.

    Wuzzup?

Yeah, like I said, BIGPOPPA..., I heard of the commercial too.

But a recent published interview with Freddie Roach has Freddie saying the production of the commercial has been rescheduled and he does not even know the new date yet.

Reference: http://www.*********.com/scott220.htm (It's in the reply to the third to the last question.)

Also, if the visit is to help push the product, I find the total absence of fanfare utterly surprising. Customarily, they not only announce the time of the arrival of star endorsers, they even call a series of press conferences and photo ops.

My understanding is that a few Filipino newspapermen who pound the beat at the Manila airport saw Erik and a handful of companions (his wife may be one of them) arrive trying hard to be incognito. Erik reportedly refused to talk to media.

Equally surprising is that Philippine mediafolks whose record is not exactly at the top of the list of people who respect privacy, appears silent on the matter, even as the rumor has crossed oceans. The husband of the Philippine president has filed libel charges against scores of media people, so Philippine media is not exactly prone to being circumspect.

Given that Erik has not officially announced his retirement, he continues to be--it appears-- a Top Rank fighter. Add to this the fact that Pacquiao just recently announced that he has picked Arum as his promoter despite the promotional imbroglio. This gets me thinking that Erik may be in the Philippines to re-inforce Pacquiao's decision, which is very unpopular with many Filipino fans who have been vocal about their belief that Pacquiao should have stayed with Golden Boy, the outfit that appears to have signed him first.

In an interview after Morales-Pac III, Pacquiao said he and Erik have become really good friends, adding that the friendship is the type that is strengthened by mutual respect and admiration. If that is true, Erik may prove to be one of the most influential figures in Pacquiao's future career/business moves.

I won't be surprised if the two come up with their own promotions company. Whether or not that shall be a good step is a bit doubtful in view of Pacquiao's recent business decisions.

But people learn from their mistakes....at least, some do. Pacquiao has been rather adept at making adjustments from fight to fight. He may just be able to learn to adapt that capacity to business.
