    A serious Peter conversation

so i don't know about everyone else- i had no bias about toney and peter's fight. i genuinely was just very interested to see one of the most skilled boxers of a generation take on the strongest and youngest heavyweight in the game. i thought toney won the first fight- but sam peter really figured some **** out. peter used an effective jab for the first time ever tonight, definately one that i think could work against maskaev.

what are everyone's thoughts on the new peter-tricks that were displayed tonight? would it be enough for him to beat wlad in a rematch if the opportunity ever arose? peter-maskaev predictions? (assuming maskaev doesnt fight wlad himself)

Basically, and not to pay myself on the back, everything I said happened as I thought it would. I thought Peter would make the adjustments and that Toney fought the best he could (albeit with poorer stamina) the last time. Toney figured Peter out last fight pretty early on whereas Peter barely had a clue about Toney in that fight. This time around Peter figured out Toney's patterns and tricks, made some wise decisions (keeping Toney at jab's length when he moved to the ropes instead of moving in for one) and negated the ONLY thing Toney had going for him (well okay, he also had handspeed) and that was Toney's superior skill and tactics.

Peter negated Toney's strength and turned him into a fat punching bag with decent handspeed. Toney could simply not escape the bigger man, not his jab, not his right, and certainly not the combinations he fought.

The only areas Peter surprised me with were his handspeed (he's actually a quick ****er when he feels like burning those calories) and his bravado. His dance at the end of the fight had me laughing out loud.

Good night Peter, just don't celebrate too hard and get too fat. You've learned a lot from Toney but you've further to go before you can unify the titles.

I think Peter was more wry in his aproach tonight because he knew Toney couldn't hurt him. He was cheeky. He stood and took Toney's shots and hit the target that was in front of him.

I felt Rahman did the same thing with Toney. Rahman looked like he had some tricks against Toney - and then Maskaev showed us what Rahman was really working with.

Because of that I will reserve judgement.

Peter looked great tonight, he was in great shape, and he fought a perfect fight. If he keeps fighting like this, he'll without a doubt beat Maskaev. I think Peter beats him by mid round KO. Then I see him in a rematch with Wlad. If he fights like he did tonight, he'll have a better chance against Wlad, but I think Wlad still beats him.

I like the fact that peter took time to do press and sign autographs. He is going to be a peoples champ, if its still possable to be a peoples champ with all the haters.
If he really is 26 I see him learning a lot. He won't be able to beat wlad but I give him good shot againts every other heavyweight champ

I think he could beat Wlad if he fought the perfect fight, and with some luck.

he could definately crush valuev's big coconut head. i've been positive of that much since valuev's HBO debut. peter and briggs seems like a realistic and very very interesting match up.

valuev was knocked off balance a bit by monte barrett's super wide looping shots (that he actually landed somewhat frequently). all i remember thinking was how sam peter throws the same punches and when they land theyre always devastating. the style matchup of peter and valuev would be horrible for the russian based solely off how much barrett landed his big shots. barrett is a big ass guy, but i don't believe in his power like i believe in peter's.

i think i'd still pick wlad to beat peter again though. but peter has certainly shown improvement- improvement that could possibly still be a work in progress? who knows. the heavyweight scene just got slightly interesting to me, which hasn't been the case in like what....2 years? hah.

Toney has lost three decisions on the bounce. Rahman was not spectacular or even as effective as you would expect given that he was supposed to be in the best shape of his life, but he outworked Toney without a doubt.

The first Toney-Peter fight was basically negated by a bull**** move from the WBC, so it was good to see Peter put the exclamation mark on a win over Toney as he did tonight.

A lot of people have been blind to Toney's lack of workrate. He has received a lot of love from the fans akin to that of Tyson. It's the kind of fanfare that betrays common sense.

Toney was larger than life and that distracted you from the facts: he still had the tricks, but his body was no longer an adequate vehicle to pull them off.

With some more seasoning, perhaps the balm of knowing he's a champion, Peter can beat Klitschko. I fully expect him to knock Maskaev out well before the distance. Peter doesn't have the frailties of Rahman.
