Happy New Year to the BoxingScene.com readership. Time to clear the vomit and shame from the corner of your mouth and get back in the swing of all things pugilistic. A new year is upon us, along with new possibilities. The year 2006 will be remembered as the year of the upset, by which I mean that I was upset that the more entertaining fights were overseas and not aired on American television. Abraham-Miranda, Monshipour-Sithchatchawal, and virtually every other fight of moderate to elevated entertainment value took place in another country, far away from the lenses of HBO and Showtime. Two things:
1) Hatton-Castillo? Bigger than a lot of these IMO.
2) Calzaghe 'won the lottery' by beating Lacy? He earned his victory by fighting beautifully, executing a brilliant gameplan and displaying supreme technical skills. You don't earn a lottery win, it's luck. Calzaghe's win against Lacy was anything but that.
Other than that, a good read.Comment

Hatton-Castillo, I'm already certain this is going to happen in the Summer anyways. Why mention it in a hypothetical article when I can do a full preview, like the cover story to this months Boxing Digest, ON NEWSSTANDS NOW!Two things:

Calzaghe won the lottery, that statement had nothing to do with luck. It was speaking on how he found the pot of gold after all of these years fighting in England on Showtime broadcasts that were beat out by Cheers re-runs in the Nielsen ratings. Before beating Lacy, which he did masterfully (you don't "beat the beejezus out of" someone by luck), he was obscure and as foreign to American audiences as Kessler. Now he's a global force in boxing.Comment
