I've been getting bored with Boxing...it's in the gutter in my opinion...even with the fights with Pac, Mayweather, Oscar, etc., it's not the same...most boxing gyms are closed, we don't have a true "top 10" in each division (which is also something I have problems with since a division is about every 5 pounds, except for Heavyweights...we have a boring Heavyweight division...no fights are on regular television, which is another reason boxing is in the E.R.
Anyway, back to the thread title
What has the Heavyweight scene been like since Tyson left? What has boxing been like since Tyson has left?
You have had some good fighters, maybe even some exciting fighters, but none like Tyson who commanded the entire World’s attention…in his prime he was the most coveted athlete in the world...his prime, though short, was incredible…the way he fought, the way he won, the way he handled himself in press conferences, all amazing…but, the downfall is what most will remember…just like Elvis when he was fat and drugged up, Tyson will be known for getting knocked out by an underdog, and then later biting Evander’s ear.
Pity, few remember how great he truly was when he was on top of his game.
I look back on those days, with such athletes like Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden, who had so much potential, so much talent, but threw it all away; even Bo Jackson, although different in that his career was taken away and not thrown away, he too, was something that “could have been”, “should have been.”
Tyson, the athlete, the man that threw away his talent…threw away what most of us could only dream of having, tossed to the side. Maybe this is why he is bashed, more so than what people say of him being “overrated.” We are pissed that he gave us so much excitement, and then took it away…He left us with a sport that has never been the same (compared to his reign).
I do not know if it is possible to have a clear judgment on how good he really was.
He looked great in his fights, in his “prime” (with Rooney), but he burnt out before he was truly tested against the “Greats” of his time, like Holyfield and Lewis. However, Holyfield and Lewis did have their run-ins with bad fights, so there is room.
All that said, ****, I am not sure I could of handled what Tyson had to go through, so I hold no grudge against it...Maybe I too, would of thrown it all away: It's hard to balance the *****, living the "Great Life", the hard training to stay at the top, the bull**** dealing with the media and solitude, back stabbing bitches trying to get your money, etc. For **** sakes, 20 years old and HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, that's some hard **** to deal with.
I will not make this any longer, since it has been discussed so many times before, but I leave you with a quote by Tyson’s mentor/trainer:
To see a man beaten not by a better opponent but by himself is a tragedy.
