Golden Boy Promotions Chief Operating Officer Richard Schaefer says they would be willing to make the eagerly awaited rematch between Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera happen. However, Schaefer stressed it would have to be staged under a 50-50 deal. [details]
Arum Responds To Golden Boy 50-50 Offer

I am surprised Arum responded positively, I thought he'd pull a "Pac beat Barrera the first time and is the bigger draw, plus he IS Top Rank and I won't accept an escrow offer, blah blah blah" response.
Instead, we get a positive vibe. Now, I'm sure there will be a sticking point and that will derail this negotiation...I don't think a fight will be signed between the two until we KNOW who Pac will be with...just too much at stake.
If Arum were to go along with this kind of offer, and Top Rank loses in court, he's out alot of expenses that won't be refundable (since he'll be providing EVERYTHING for Pac from training through fight night and then some). Maybe he can add a clause to the contract offer that GBP reimburses Top Rank all these costs if GBP wins the court case...? Sounds logical.
I hope I'm wrong and this gets signed soon, and I hope it is March, not April as well... -
Golden Boy Offers Pacquiao 50-50 For Barrera
Moments ago Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told **********.com, "We have read reports out of the Philippines that Bob Arum made an offer to Golden Boy Promotions for $2.5M to provide the services of Marco Antonio Barrera for a fight with Manny Pacquiao on April 28 in Las Vegas. We are surprised by these actions since Top Rank doesn't have options on either fighter. Golden Boy, on the other hand, has a valid promotional deal with Barrera and believes that ultimately, as well with Pacquiao. Having said that we understand that both fighters want this fight to happen and Golden Boy Promotions doesn't want to stand in their way. We therefore would be willing to stage this fight under a 50-50 deal. We further agree to put the promotinal profits attributable to the Pacquiao side of the deal into an escrow account until such time that the courts decide who the legal promoter of Pacquiao is. At such times these profits would be either distributed to either Golden Boy or Top Rank. It's now up to Manny Pacquiao to accep this deal, which is of course substantially better than this fight going to purse-bid where Golden Boy would insist on the standard 75-25 split in favor of the champion, Marco Antonio Barrera. Furthermore, we have the date, March 17. We have the site, The MGM Grand in Las Vegas and we have the PPV, which we believe is substantially better than doing the fight a week before the De La Hoya-Mayweather showdown." (2:29 PM EST)

MANNY PACQUIAO HAS UNTIL MONDAY TO ACCEPT BARRERA REMATCH!
oments ago Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer issued the following statement exclusively to **********.com, "It is not up to Bob Arum to respond to our offer since he has no promotional right to Manny Pacquiao, and he therefore cannot intend to negotiate with him. However, as I stated yesterday, we do not want to stand in the fighters way to make this fight, nor do we want to deprive the public from seeing this epic battle. Our offer was not intended as a negotiation, but to present a fair and lucrative offer to make this fight a reality. Marco Antonio Barrera has many different options as it relates to his next opponent, but we are prepared to honor the 50-50 as outlined yesterday on **********. Marco is the champion and his willingness to agree to a 50-50 deal, only if the fight doesn't go to purse-bid is certainly a generous offer to Manny. I am sure that Manny and his team understand that if the fight goes to purse-bid the split would be 75-25 in favor of Barrera. Marco and Golden Boy however, are not willing to sit around and wait. Pay-per-view deadlines force us to impose a deadline of Monday January 1 for Team Pacquiao to either accept or decline our offer. It is very unfortunate that Bob Arum, through his tortious interference, has clouded Manny Pacquiao's mind. Because of Bob's actions with the help and assistance of certain members of Team Pacquiao, particularly Michael Koncz, this long awaited fight might not happen and cost the fighters as well as Golden Boy a substantial loss of money and opportunity. As indicated yesterday, the deal is a 50-50 deal and Golden Boy is the promoter, however Golden Boy would agree to withhold all promotional profits attributable to the Pacquiao side in an escrow account until such time the courts decide who the legal promoter of Manny Pacquiao is. On a more personal note, Manny this is your chance to step up. Take control and accept the fight you claim you want the most. If Bob Arum wants what's best for you he will not stand in your way to make this career definining fight. If we agree to hold the promotional profits in an escrow account Arum has nothing to lose. If he should win the case he gets the money and if he does not, then he doesn't deserve it. However, you deserve the opportunity to fight the best Mexican fighter of our generation, the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera. If you want to be the boss and the people around you tell you that you are the boss, then take charge act like the boss and accept the fight." (1:49 PM EST)Comment

at first i was going to say that Barerra doesn't deserve a 50-50 split, but then when i looked at it, it's a fair deal, plus i'm sure that they're going to get a good chunk of the PPV.
it seems that a 50-50 split is the only way that Barerra is going to fight, i bet Pac doesn't care all that much, anything he makes is like a billion bucks in the Philippines even after getting mooched off of by his manager, promoter, advisors, and who else he has to pay off.
i takes two to make a mega fight and barerra and pac are defiantly the two who can draw in a massive crowd, and even better they draw in a crossover crowd, casual fans as well as people who aren't really fans in boxing, not to mention that this fight will draw in fans that aren't either mexican or pinoy, it appeals to everyone. so 50-50 seems fair...........Comment

I'd love to see the fight- they should make it happen. I'd say it was one my top fights of 2007 list for sure.Comment
