  • De La Hoya-Mayweather: The Road to Greatness Begins

Boxing will experience a somewhat over-hyped event this coming May in the form of a fight between a prime Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather and a gracefully aging yet far from his peak Oscar “Golden Boy” De La Hoya. This bout is not in the same class as matches between, say, a prime Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran near his apex, nor is it the equivalent of the battle between a peak Marvin Hagler and a prime Thomas Hearns, or any number of other past bouts.

However, De La Hoya-Mayweather is a good attraction, and certainly worthy of being offered on pay-per-view. It is possible this match may be among the most lucrative of all time, but this is because of the drawing power of De La Hoya rather than the talent of Mayweather. The reason this is such a creditable match is that it should prove to be competitive on paper at least, and it will give us a real clue as to just how great Floyd Mayweather really is.

Unlike De La Hoya, after this battle Pretty Boy will still need to show us much more than a victory over an aging Oscar before we can place him alongside such fistic immortals as Willie Pep, Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Henry Armstrong, Benny Leonard, Harry Greb, Mickey Walker, Ray Leonard, Bernard Hopkins, Roberto Duran, Eder Jofre, Manuel Ortiz, Marvin Hagler and so many other top-flight, all-time greats. I don't think Bernard Hopkins is in the same class as Sugar Ray Leonard and those others. He's a great but not on SRL's level.

I've said that prime Floyd beats prime Oscar, but after seeing the replay of Oscar-Mayorga, 2007 Floyd humiliates 2007 Oscar. He only looked great cuz Mayorga ****in ******. Oscar looked very, very slow, much slower than I've ever seen him. This could mean not only loss of hand and foot speed, but of stamina as well. He was also not cutting off the ring as effectively as he had done in the past. Floyd is going to win a landslide.

i know oscar is training very hard for this fight. th eman never lacks heart in the ring even in the big fights that he lost, but i agree with the above poster, mayweather is going to defeat oscar. and i'm not basing it off of his fight against mayorga either.

Is Tito "my boy" because we were both born in the same place? I'm not a Tito fan and never have been, and besides, Oscar is going to fight Floyd, not Tito, so why even bring it up?

Because Mayorga was finished/not the same after the Tito fight, Tito destroyed his ass, and oscar beat trinidad leftovers

(Not a fan of Tito here but the truth is the truth, i dont know how you can compare the Mayorga of then and Mayorga of now, Ricardo was finished already), I believe Oscar will try his best to pull out a win but Mayweather will be victorious something like 117-111, he will dominate.

You will be the probably only one...everyone wants to see this fight, and it will do more PPV's than any other fight in history, in any weight class.
