MAXBOXING.COM TO AIR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT ON MONDAY, DECMEBER 18
WATCH JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMP JOAN GUZMAN DEFEND HIS WBO TITLE VS. ANTONIO “T-REX” DAVIS LIVE, EXCLUSIVELY ON MAX-TV
December 18th will be the last chance for fight fans in the United States (and most of the world) to watch LIVE championship boxing in 2006.
The champion putting his world title on the line that night is undefeated Joan Guzman, who will be defending his WBO 130-pound title for the first time against no. 5-rated contender Antonio “T-Rex” Davis at the Palacio De Los Deportes in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The only place to watch one of boxing’s most talented fighters defend his junior lightweight title LIVE is on MaxBoxing.com, the leading provider of boxing content on the web.
Guzman, undefeated in 26 pro fights and the first fighter from the Dominican Republic to win world titles in two weight classes, will headline what is perhaps the greatest boxing card in the island’s history exclusively on a pay-per-view basis, with existing MaxBoxing.com subscribers receiving a discount on the $9.95 viewing price.
This exclusive webcast, which is provided by MaxBoxing’s MaxTV, in association with Jay Boxing Promotions, will be telecast live from Santo Domingo on Monday, December 18th, with the main event to start at approximately 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.
Guzman-Davis will be available to all boxing fans with a dial-up or broadband connection at a price of $9.95, which includes three undercard fights and a free one-month membership to MaxBoxing.com. MaxBoxing.com subscribers may view the card for a discounted price of $7.95. Those unable to see the fight live on December 18th will be able to view an On Demand replay of the bout for a one week period following the bout.
Windows Media Player is required for viewing.
Joan Guzman is perhaps the most accomplished boxer in the Dominican Republic’s history. After an amateur career that included more than 300 bouts and culminated with three Central Americas championships, a gold medal at the Pan-American Games and a spot on the Dominican Republic’s 1996 Olympic team, Guzman joined the professional ranks in ’97 and rang off 17 consecutive victories before winning the WBO’s 122-pound title in Cardiff, Wales with a third-round stoppage of then-undefeated Fabio Daniel Oliva in August of 2002.
After a two-and-half-year run as a 122-pound titlist, which included two defenses, Guzman jumped to the featherweight division last year and easily pounded out an impressive unanimous decision over tough and then-undefeated Thai Terdsak Jandaeng, earning mandatory contender status for WBO featherweight champ Scott Harrison. However, after having three title dates cancelled by the troubled Scotsman, Guzman gave up on the 126-pound division and made his junior lightweight debut this past May with a one-sided 10-round decision over former IBF lightweight titlist Javier Jauregui.
On Dec. 18, the powerful-but-elusive boxer-puncher will be making the first defense of the WBO 130-pound title he won from rugged Argentine warrior Jorge Barrios this past September.
However, Guzman (26-0, with 17 KOs) is not getting a soft title challenger with the WBO’s no. 5 contender Antonio Davis, a slick stylist from Atlanta who has held the USBA and the NABO’s 130-pound titles, as well as the IBA world title.
Davis (22-2, with 11 KOs) has only lost one fight in his last 19 bouts, a close majority decision loss to contender Koba Gogoladze (who was 17-1 at the time) this past February. He has won three bouts since. His only other loss was to hard-punching lightweight contender Edner Cherry in only his fifth pro fight.
Davis, who has a computer science degree from Coppin State, is not only a competent boxer, he’s no dummy. He’s expecting Guzman at his best on Dec. 18th.
“I am sure that Guzman is training his butt off for this bout,” Davis told veteran fight scribe Michael Marley, “not so much because of me but because it is his homecoming.”
And what a homecoming it will be. Guzman-Davis is supported by eight undercard bouts featuring the top boxing talent of the Dominican Republic (hence the card’s title “Noche De Estrellas Dominicana De Boxeo”). Power-punching featherweight contender Hector Julio Avila (40-2, with 37 KOs) will be featured along with four undefeated prospects, including middleweight standout Giovanni Lorenzo (21-0, with 13 KOs) and junior middleweight slugger Euri Gonzalez (12-0, with 9 KOs).
At least three undercard bouts will be broadcast live on Max-TV as part of the pay-per-view show.
Guzman’s co-promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, the Dominican Republic’s president, Leonel Fernandez, and many of the country’s most notable baseball stars, including Sammy Sosa, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez and Julio Franco will be ringside at the historic nine-bout card, which will be announced by the classy Jimmy Lennon Jr.
