    Oleg Maskaev: The Comeback Kid

If you open up a dictionary and look for the true definition of a modern day Cinderella man, WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev will be the man pictured next to the description.

Between the years 2000 and 2002, Maskaev was knocked out three times. On October 7, 2000, he was stopped in four rounds by the Kirk Johnson, who is not the hardest puncher at the weight. Johnson sent Maskaev flying through the ropes with a shot that left him barely conscious and unable to stand for several minutes.

In his very next fight, less than five months later, Maskaev was once again knocked out. This time Lance Whitaker, a fighter who is a fringe contender at best, demolished him in two rounds.

After suffering back to back knockout losses, he picked himself up off floor and took on a few easy opponents to regain his confidence in the ring. Then the unforeseeable happened, he was once a again knocked out. This time it was against an opponent many regarded as a journeyman fighter, Corey "T-Rex" Sanders.

He met Sanders in March of 2003, and was stopped in the eighth round. Sanders seemed like a safe fight, he sported six losses on his record, and prior to facing Maskaev he was beaten by fighters with 9-23 and 19-25 records. Another interesting point is that Maskaev would be the last win Sanders would ever receive in the ring. He went on to lose every single bout since 2002. [details]

            very good article..

I really feel bad for the guy as he was mismanaged all of his career...

He could have gotten there on top a lot earlier

Last night I watched his fight with Tua (youtube - full fight 5 parts) and he was completely dominating tua the whole fight until he got caught in the 11th.. he was cruising to an easy decision and should have been careful in those last final rounds knowing Tua, the undefeted international WBC champ, will be desparate...

While Ruiz was cashing in in his big fights, Maskaev worked as a bouncer in one of the restaraunt/club in Brooklyn... I don't hink Maskev is on a different level than Ruiz, if not better.

Glad he is on top now and has a chance to cash in before retirement

Im happy for Maskaev he finally became the wbc champ and all his hard work paid off, but I think his reign is coming to an end shortly, maybe not, him and Klitschko want to fight for unification but I dont think it will happen, either way his next fight will be exciting...

Being a Hockey fan and Even a Childhood player.. I can tell You Maskaev seemed to be suffering from the affects of a consuscion for a while.. He perhaps suffered it in the Johnson Fight and was shaky and easy to KO over the next 4 fights.. Concusive injuries LINGER and are easy to reaggrevate.. ANd wont heal if head trauma continues.. This is why Maskaev was easy to KO at one point and is considered Glass jawed and somewhat easy to beat.
the truth is.. he is a tough hard hitting decently skilled boxer puncher who is going to be harder to dethrone than people think.. The only negative is age..
