  • winky wright and his fight style

larry merchant brought up a great point in the baldomir - mayweather ppv. he said a great fighter would of gave the fans their money's worth and would stand in the middle of the ring and brall.

winky wright really impresses me with the way he does this when he fights. winky is becoming a fighter to watch for action. although, he dominated the fight, he allowed his fights to be interesting by standing and fighting alot more than he did early in his car eer.

    i hope this trend continues.

so yeah, he's always been an action fighter.

Have you seen him run away? no. He does virtually the same thing he did at the beginning of his career.....press the action and land. Greatest D ever.

actually, early in his career he rathered to stick and move but he changed this trend against vargas.

the only criticism he has is he tends to give away the 12th round - did so against taylor and vargas in recent memory. it cost him twice.

i gotta say, the tito fight had me intrested. the soliman fight made me cheer for a winky KO. the taylor fight had me think "winky COULD get a TKO". and the quartey fight made me think "winky's gone from boxer to warrior". i love it!

good for winky. see? winky did what floyd should've done: stood his ground with an outclassed opponent and let ur hands go.

my respect for winky continues to rise. my respect for floyd has dropped dramatically since the baldy fight.

the beautiful thing was - winky was 35 and ike 37 and these guys were fighting like they really had something to prove (albeit they did - but still). you don't always see that with guys that are at the tail ends of their careers.

            Good observations.

I hadn't looked at Winky quite that way. I love his defense and overall techinical skill.

What is equally as impressive is he pushes the action, he comes out with his shield arms and moves right into opponents, he doesn't wait to counterpunch, which is what most defensive minded fighters do.

I'll admit, I kind of get less enjoyment when he doesn't get a knockout, but overall his fights are exciting to me.

i think a big reason why he doesn't have a lot of power is because he really wings his punches, especially the straight left. he converted to southpaw really late in his career which is why he throws the left with not much leg torque and with not very good technique. he throw's nice body shots though and his uppercut is very solid. i am sold on winky - p4p # 1 in my opinion.

You have to criticize winky, if you criticize Floyd.
                He doesn't finish people either.

but he gives the fans what they want to see. he is not always in cruise control like floyd.

A smart fighter wouldn't stand in front of someone when he has a great speed advantage. A smart fighter also wouldn't do that if his opponent outweights him by 13 pounds on fight night.
