Yeah, but he'd only just started boxing like a year previous and was probably coming up against guys who'd been boxing for 10-15 years.

Certainly, there was a huge contrast between his last amateur fight (Joseph Henry at New York Golden Gloves semi-final) and first pro fight (Tim Brown, 1981 Pennsylvania Golden Gloves champion), he looked awful against Henry but fantastic against Brown. He changed trainers from Andy Martinez to Maximo Pierret and only turned pro to pay a high school telephone bill because he'd been phoning a girl in England The commentators (of his pro debut) on SportsChannel, Randy Gordon and Steve Farhood, told Eubank's manager Adonis Torres that Eubank was a future world champion! And so he fought again. And he only knew how to throw straight punches! Good ****, eh?

Boxing, or even sports in general, need more Chris Eubank type figures. A sportsman or woman, can have all the talent in the world, but if they're devoid of any personality it reduces interest in them. Chris Eubank brought interest to the masses, not just because he was skilled boxer, the main reasons where his charisma, how he dressed and conducted himself and just the fact the guy was an eccentric.

I believe Mr Calzaghe's lack of personality hinders his popularity, he's not even a household name it seems. A domestic rival may have helped, being shown on prime time terrestrial TV may have hepled too, but my point remains.
