Kronk Gym has closed for good

    Report: Kronk Gym closed!
Detroit's famous Kronk Gym has closed for good according to the Detroit Free Press. The facility brought to prominence by super trainer Emanuel Steward was the breeding ground for many world champions including ring legend Tommy Hearns. Efforts to raise enough funds to save the city-run facility were unsuccessful and the September theft of the copper pipes in the Kronk delivered the final KO blow, prompting Detroit's Recreation Department to force out the Kronk fighters, who have regrouped at a Gold's Gym in Dearborn. Steward reportedly plans to open a new Kronk Gym.

This is a tragedy. Many of the Kronk fighters of yesteryear are either broke or passed away. See boxingscene post from a while ago. Those that are still alive are working in regular jobs like us or are in prison. Emmanuel Steward has put a lot of his own money into Kronk and has tried to raise money too. There was an event locally here in Detroit recently but the donations barely paid for the event let alone any money for the gym. It is a shame. What is also a shame is how so many people give so much credit to Manny for his ability to train and soooo many fighters that he made champions. The truth of the matter is Manny was an intregal part but there are so many more that helped make these fighters great champions. The likes of Walter Smith, Floyd Logan, Bill Miller, Don Thibodeaux, Lee Crenshaw, Tommy Brooks, John Brown, and the late Sammy Poe, Al DeNapoli, Willie Brown and Festus Price. See www.Kronkgym.com and click on "history". Im not trying to slam anyone, it's just that all you hear about is Emmanuel....Bill Miller taught Manny how to fight when Manny was a kid. Bill Miller is 81 and still training fighters...These guys deserve our props!!!!! Long live Kronk and I hope that Manny can pull it off and build a new gym. Kronk pulled a lot of kids off the street, out of trouble and made many champions...
