Marvin Hagler on Calzaghe and Hatton

    Hagler on Calzaghe

"I knew the first time I saw Calzaghe that he really had something, he went in there completely unfazed against (Chris) Eubank which nobody else had done. Eubank was the guy who usually seemed to have control of everything around him but the way Calzaghe went in there and manhandled him like that...

"I was watching it in Italy, it was the same night England beat Italy to qualify for the soccer World Cup.

"Calzaghe showed and proved power, speed, strength, workrate, stamina, chin, heart and every tangible and intangible that night and that's why I'm not suprised that he's not lost since.

"Sometimes it's like watching a welterweight or junior-middleweight in a super-middleweight's body because he's so nimble and sharp handed. I would never bet against him."

    Hagler on Hatton

"The Ricky Hatton that fought Kostya Tszyu beats absolutely anybody at 140 pounds.

"He can work his way in on his toes with that skilful jab or he can close that gap like lightning. He's got all the punches, all the moves, very strong in the legs, great, great tempo and (he) mixes it up.

"And he seemed prepared to walk through a landslide if need be on that night when he fought Kostya Tszyu - just to get his hands on the title.

"I'd seen clips of him destructing through everybody but always wondered how he'd cope if he was backed up. I thought Ben Tackie might be too much for him but he proved that night he can switch it up and box beautifully if need be.

"You didn't see the best of him against (Luis) Collazo. What I say is everybody is allowed one bad day at the office and that was his."

whats the deal with Marvin Hagler? it seems that he's favoring european guys like Calz and Hatton. (is it because he lived in italy?) ive read a couple of articles with hagler mentioning how GOOD or maybe GREAT hatton and Calz are.

How about the others guys like Cotto, Winky, PBF, Jermain etc. Does he really think that these 2 guys are better than the others ??

Haglers never liked the British people because they threated him like **** when he was in his prime.

Hagler was never a big fan of British boxing, but maybe he's changed now, people do change!

JuyJuy I know you are one the most honest posters here but can I see a link for this one please.

It's in Boxing News, ask other Brit's on the forum to scan it.

Hagler also said before the Lacy fight that he considered Calzaghe to be in the top six lb4lb, and tipped Hatton to beat Mayweather before the Collazo fight.

The bookmakers favour Lacy, but the legendary American middleweight, Marvin Hagler, sees Calzaghe as a marginal favourite. Hagler rates the Welshman in the world's top six, pound-for-pound.
            http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/mai...4/ixsport.html

"I saw Ricky beat Kostya Tszyu to win the IBF light-welterweight title last year and for me the kid's got everything," said Hagler.

"I don't know that much about Collazo, but I know enough about Hatton to know he's going to win and keep winning - and I include Floyd Mayweather in that.

"He's got the lot and he's a hungry fighter. He's also got that streak of nastiness in the ring and bags of talent and that makes a winning combination. I don't think there's any limit to what he can achieve."

HE was known simply in these parts as 'Marvelous' - and Marvin Hagler believes Ricky Hatton can be just as awesome as he sets about cracking America.

Hagler liked Nigel Benn, he was asked in 1989 if there was any prospect he was particularly excited about and he immediately said "Nigel Benn" and mentioned Benn had a lot of natural talent - and this was AFTER the Watson fight.

                  I'd have to disagree.

                    Nigel Benn's cousin Paul Ince:

                    - 11 Oct '97, vs. Italy

There's all kinds of weird angles in this thread!

Hagler's head was busted open against Hearns.

Hagler probably tuned it expecting to see Steve Collins (who he'd groomed when Collins went to Boston) fight (fight Calzaghe), but ended up with Eubank (fighting Calzaghe) because Collins had pulled out of the fight (Calzaghe fight) with 10 days to go.
