Santiago looks to be a little bit stronger, a bit heavier-handed and technically more polished, he has the amateur background that has to be respected — and he is a southpaw. But Garcia has upset two Puerto Rican prospects this year, boxers who on paper should have beaten him. Can he pull off the Puerto Rican hat-trick? We know that he will give it a tremendous try, but I think Santiago has a little too much for him in most departments and I take the Puerto Rican to punch out a hard-earned win on points.
Garcia had been looking better than he has ever looked prior to meeting Beltran, having scored two upset wins over touted Puerto Ricans in Las Vegas fights that I saw from ringside.
First Garcia pounded out a unanimous six-round decision over the Olympic representative Carlos Valcarcel, who had won eight bouts in a row. Then he stopped Juan Ramon Cruz, who had lost only once in 16 fights, in the sixth.
Cruz was winning on two judges’ cards after five rounds but Garcia blasted him with right hands in the sixth.
Two of Garcia’s three losses came in close bouts (majority and split decision). Industry colleagues tell me he loves to fight, loves to train, loves to spar — a young man who lives the fighter’s life, in fact. He never had the chance to get started against Beltran, so it is good to see this hard-working fighter get another TV opportunity
