Marquez Guts Out KO Win Over Jaca

A familiar scenario was showcased in Hidalgo, Texas. Two fighters, one from Mexico and one from the Philippines, battled for bragging rights and future opportunities.

Last week, Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao scored a big win when he demolished Erik Morales of Mexico in three rounds. This time around, Juan Manuel Marquez (46-3-1, 35KOs), who battled Pacquiao to a draw in 2004, evened up the odds by knocking out Jimrex Jaca (27-3, 12KOs) in nine rounds.

The fight started slow, but that pace did not last for long as a clash of heads caused a serious cut above the right eye of Marquez, prompting the Mexican fighter to pick up the pace and begin throwing power punches in bunches. Jaca would not take a step back and was more than happy to engage Marquez in numerous fight fights consisting of power punching exchanges.

Both men had their moments, but in the fifth round a determined Marquez took over the fight and saw him landing often with his right hand, and backing up Jaca with combinations. In the ninth round, Jaca was looking for the right hand as a bloody Marquez caught him cold with a big left hook that sent him down to the canvas. Once on the mat, Jaca appeared to be disoriented and was unable to make it up before the count of ten.

The question now is whether or not Juan Manuel Marquez will face WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera next March. The word coming out of the offices of Golden Boy Promotions has Marquez as the top runner to replace Manny Pacquiao if the Filipino warrior is unable to make the 2007 pay-per-view date. [details]

What a fight. It's really too bad JMM is 33 (or 34).

It seems to me that he trained to get a knockout. He started the same way against Pacquiao, but immediately felt the power of Pac and changed his style. I'm guessing he didn't think much of Jaca's power so he went blow for blow because he knew he could. Good way to earn more fans in my opinion.

On a side note, he would not go in like this on a rematch with Pacman. I guarantee you that.
