Three fights and Villoria seems the same; a disappointment, simply because much is expected of him-- the very least of which, letting it all hang out.
In all of his last three fights he was tentative. It may be unkind to say it, but, in his last appearance, he seemed afraid, either to get hurt or to hurt his opponent--even may be both. Up to the middle rounds, he threw punches while on his back foot, leaning back, instead of putting his body weight behind his punches.
They both being Filipinos, it is inevitable that peope stack Villoria up against Pacquiao, particularly in terms of attitude inside the ring. Up to his winning the crown against Ortiz the comparison went favorably. After that, the fire in him seems to have just been extinguished for no apparent reason other than that which is based on the speculation that he still carries with him the thought that he nearly killed Ruben Contreras, and lugs that around as a heavy burden.
Villoria still has loyal fans. But he could have had a lot more--much, much more-- had he shown more heart, or at the very least, shown more enthusiasm. Fighters are better respected for fighting. People tend to lose respect on a fighter who's just happy to get from round one to the final bell.
Villoria said, he will continue to fight "his heart out". I'm sorry to say that I saw very little of that heart in his last three fights and I dread the assurance that he'll fight his future fights with such kind of heart.
I don't think Brian is a bum. He has championship skills. He just has mental issues that he needs to deal with fully.
I am a disappointed fan, but a fan just the same. Stubbornly so. There will be more of my type if Brian continues to perform in the manner that he did recently. And that's not very good for Brian.Last edited by grayfist; 11-21-2006, 09:43 PM.Comment
