  • Howard Foster strikes again

Big congratulations to Nick Blackwell first of all. If anyone in boxing earned a bit of luck its him. If he can get a bit off guile to go with his grit and toughness he could be a really good fighter.

Still though, what the hell was Foster doing?

Ryder was hurt but Blackwell had just missed a 6 punch combo and Ryder started slipping punches on the ropes and that's grounds for a stoppage? Maybe he would have been stopped legitimately but you got to let it play out.

Gutted for Ryder, wasnt a good style match up for him. He wanted to work inside but Blackwell is just a hard hard barstard and working inside probably gave him his best shot at winning.

Hope Ryder can rebuild because I am a believer in his talent. He does look a bit like a bulked up Jnr middleweight though

Foster was doing his job, it was a great stoppage. When a fighter is not protecting himself and getting hit with many unanswered blows that is precisely when a referee needs to stop it.

When he back into the ropes and slipped to the left Blackwell missed like 8 shots in a row. Its poor timing and a panicked decision from Foster.

Boxers get hurt in fights, it happens. There was no need to stop it at that point. Maybe Ryder would have been legitimately stopped a few seconds later, or maybe he recovers and goes back to winning the fight, we'll never know because Foster has terrible decision making skills.

Ryder wasn't protecting himself, a number of punches landed and only at the end did those punches miss but not because Ryder was really doing anything to protect himself. If you let those situations carry on then you are badly endangering the fighter. This was as good a stoppage as you can get.

By the time of the stoppage he had started to move again and looked to be slipping a punch.

Ryder was clearly hurt but he should have been given a chance to continue recovering.

He just backed up with his hands low straight into the ropes and then just tilted his head down to the side and then moved forward and didn't actually move his arms out hard to grab hold, he was really a mess at this point. If Foster hadn't moved in when he did then Blackwell would have just unloaded on him and all Ryder would have gained is a chance to be punched cleanly with at least two or three punches. The chances of him recovering were very slim, a referee should not risk a fighters health for such a slim chance. I wouldn't be surprised if Sims would have taken him out even if he had lasted to the bell.
