But I have read Roy Shaw's autobiography.I remember him talking about fighting Ron Stander, who fought for the heavyweight title against Joe Frazier. Apparently,Shaw was repeatedly hitting him on the chin with his best right hand punch and Stander was just lying on the ropes, absorbing the punches, saying "Good Boy...Good Boy..." waiting for Shaw to punch himself out.Shaw then went downstairs and Stander suddenly moaned.Shaw turned the fight around and managed to win it.I don't know whether on stoppage or on points.Roy later learnt that Stander had gone on a alcoholic binge a few days earlier and had fallen over and broken a couple of ribs.Shaw wrote in his autobiography that, if Stander had come into the fight in condition, he was in no doubt that he would have "mullered" him. That's the exact word he used,I believe. That kind of objectivity is rare in a fighter.Mr Shaw's certainly a unique character.
BTW Stander's chin held up against some of the top pros in the heavyweight division.A little more on it from another fighter's autobiography....
"Stander's head was as hard as Italian marble.I built up a lead in the first two rounds.Every time Stander started to punch, the crowd reacted with raucous whoops.
In the third round,I broke my right hand punching the impregnable corn-fed noggin. My hands had been wrapped too tightly before the bout.....
The pain was overwhelming, but I tried to keep punching, but with just one good hand I was only half as effective as before. That's when the tide turned in Stander's favour and I'll be honest-the guy could whack too.At the beginning of the the fifth round,my corner threw in the towel and Stander received a technical knockout victory. It was the first time somebody had beaten me using his head as deadly weapon."
Anyone care to guess who the narrator is here ?
No cheating.
Ron Stander,to be sure, had a half-decent chin.

And what the **** would you know about British bums and make such a bold statement you nob jockey?!
Perhaps you might have to live here first! Get an understanding of London life and the rest of England..Live and breathe this sport from the very bottom up. The Dockers, The war time veterans, The villans, The pikies & travelers, The chancers as well as the Ex pros and up coming amateurs. Get a taste of British life and you might just grasp what happened in those glory days of prize fighting! That was just ONE era that caught the limelight. Boxing has been in my family 100 yrs and i cant even trace back further but my grandad, his brothers & my great grandad all Pro boxers but all boxed bare knuckle as well. They were all hard men but also gentlemen to my knowledge. Even at the age of 55 my grandad was still winning fights bareknuckle against people half his age. And most of the time it was to put food on the table. You might read the odd book and hear some silly internet bollocks and come to the assumption what unlicenced fighting was all about. Yeah, the Shaw/Mclean fights were quite brutal but that i'm affraid was a product of British enviroment at that time. But don't think for a second it started with these people.. they just happened to take it to the masses. Your talking 100's of years in the making. You ask why people idolise bare knuckle fighters..? Perhaps it's because they are the real people on the street, your manor, your hood or whatever you wanna call it. Local heroes to some just the same as supporting your local football team for lack of better explaination. You can't expect everything to go by the book in terms of what the Queensbury rules say and if the people want to see it.. then give the people what they want! It's entertainment and especially after the War it bred certain individuals and characters that i don't think we'll see again anytime soon. It's our history and any any man that make the effort to step in them ropes gets my respect. Right or wrong, conditioned or unconditioned they aint BUMS!
I boxed for 7 years myself so i've got full respect for the rules. Prizefighting is just another part of Britsh subculture and with todays bull**** gangster mentality and i'm all for settleing the old school way. WITH A GOOD STRAIGHTENER in the ring!
Sorry if i've rambled on. I see the 'They are British bums' quote and had to say something. It ain't all what you read and watch in this internet generation. But i guess if you don't live here you'll never know...
Feel free to pick holes in any of this. I couldn't really give a toss!
