Dont know how many people watched the 2002 Commenwealth games but if you were England you might of seen it on the BBC. Well i watched it and there was one boxer who stood out from Canada - Jean Pascal. He was only 19 at the time and won gold against an English fighter. This guy was very impressive and was easily the hardest puncher p4p in the tournament. You might not of heard from him in the Olypmics because he got beaten by a Cuban in the 2nd round.
Heres a report on his last fight:
PASCAL WINS CANADIAN TITLE, HEADED SOUTH ON SCALES
Former Canadian Olympian and current premier national prospect Jean Pascal won the vacant Canadian super middleweight title via seventh round stoppage over the game but overmatched Martin Desjardins.
Desjardins, 5-6-1 (3 KO), of Maniwaki, Quebec, may not have an impressive looking record, but proved a solid and rugged test for the dynamic Pascal, 10-0 (9 KO), taking the flashy power puncher past the fourth round for the first time. It was the also first time the tough Desjardins was stopped.
Pascal, who looks to have seen a Roy Jones Jr. fight or two, will use the jab when necessary, but likes to stand just out of range with his low-slung left hand and then leap in and explode with blazing leads and combos. His lightning lead right would prove to be the key punch of the night. He used a straight version to rock Desjardins at the end of the third, a crushing overhand version to drop his opponent while he came off the ropes with a hook at the beginning of the fourth, and dropped him once more with a straight right after a bit of Jones-like hand-wave clowning at the end of the round.
Desjardins kept on coming in the fifth despite the increasing frequency of impressive swift body/head combinations from Pascal, but another lead right hand down the pike put Desjardins on the canvas for the third time as he collapsed to one knee. The gutsy Desjardins actually looked better in the sixth than he had for a few rounds, and started with a cleanly landed hook - the one punch he was able to land with some success throughout the fight - but alas, it had little effect on the juiced-up Pascal. It would prove to be the journeyman's last stand. Another hard right slammed into his head midway through the seventh, he fell to his knees, and his corner wisely stopped the fight.
In an interview afterwards, Pascal's promoter Yvon Michel stated that they planned to have the muscular 5'11 prospect go down 8 pounds to the currently hot middleweight division, and win a North American title next year. Pascal, based in Montreal, has fought four of his ten bouts at 164lbs, but it remains to be seen how he'll handle sweating out those last four... If he can make weight comfortably, he'll likely
Dont know how many other people would of heard him but from what i say in the commenwealth games i would place good money that he will be a world champion in the next few years.
