A young London boxer is tipped to become a world champion after being spotted by Mike Tyson's trainer.
Darryl Williams, 20, was invited to train in the United States this summer by Kevin Rooney after a DVD of him fighting caught the eye of the boxing veteran.
Williams took up the sport only two years ago, but is already being described as “that Tyson kid” as his style is so similar to that of the star.
He is now set to fly out in July to spend two weeks sparring and competing at the renowned Cus D'Amato's Boxing Gym in New York, where the heavyweight champion also used to train.
“Even now it has not really sunk in,” said Williams, from Forest Hill. “I don't think it will sink it until I get to American soil. I never expected anything like this from my lifestyle. Before boxing, I was up to no good.
“The aim is to go professional; I want all the bouts, all the titles. I'm really hungry for it. You can't be satisfied.”
He got his US break when friends showed a DVD of him fighting in Luton to Mr Rooney. A Cus D'Amato's Boxing Gym spokesman said the club has a group of British amateur fighters travelling to America to train.
Williams got into boxing through the Double Jab gym in Forest Hill, where he also works as a mentor to children training under the gym's youth project.
David John, who founded Double Jab, said finding the “gladiatorial” young boxer felt like George Martin must have done when he came across the Beatles.
“You couldn't hit the kid with a handful of rice; his head movement is that good. Then once the fight's done, he reverts back to this most pleasant kid who wants to look after the little kids,” he said.
Like Tyson, Mr John said, Williams had had a troubled upbringing and had been written off as a “problem kid”.
Mr John thinks the boxer will be ready to turn professional by this time next year and will probably end up as a light heavyweight.
Thanks for sharing, it's pretty cool that Rooney has started to train him. I'll definitely keep an eye on this kid.
But its going to be tough for this guy, calling him the new Tyson already and with Rooney now his trainer. It could all get a bit too much for the kid.
He seems like he's got his head screwed on in a few interviews. I think it'll be a big boost to his confidence going to the states and training with Rooney. He's turning pro early next year according to BoxRec and I believe he's only 21/22 years old.
Definitely has the head movement and hand positioning and tries his best at peekaboo seen a couple of his fights and some additional footage of him online, definitely looks like he is suited for the style. Thanks for the heads up T2.
