The Mitchell-Murray fight last night got me thinking back to Kev's clash with Ingemar a few years back and in turn got me thinking about how much I loved/love this diminutive deliverer of edge-of-the-seat tear-ups.
Dynamite little fighter, a really endearing, compellingly unassuming tough-nut with hardship etched into his features and just a lovely, compact blend of slightly underestimated skills and raw intangibles, one of my domestic favs since I started watching the sport in the early 90's. Have really fond memories of seeing him wreck Michael Gomez' **** at the Dome back in '07 - Gomez was a tremendously courageous and exciting fighter and a really engaging character, his ring charisma was undeniable, but I just never *liked* him, and the win allowed Carl to get one over in some small, indirect way on a guy who'd had his number in H2H's (the Armenian beast Kirakosyan), so that one was especially satisfying.
Really wish he'd been able to finish off Gary Sykes and regain his old British title earlier this year in yet another minor classic.
