  • John Murray vs. Kevin Mitchell Confirmed - Who wins?

    From Frank Warren's site:

Hot on the heels of DeGale V Groves, Promoter Frank Warren will follow it up with yet another mouth-watering domestic showdown that the whole country wants to see – John Murray versus Kevin Mitchell.

The two best Lightweights in the country have now both signed up for a summer showdown with London expected to play host.

Former British, Commonwealth and European Champion Murray, 31-0-0 (18), boasts the longest unbeaten run in British Boxing and sees Mitchell as the last hurdle in his quest to challenge for a world title challenge. Essex man Mitchell, 31-1-0 (23), sees Mancunian rival as his ticket back to the big time after his disappointment at Upton Park and knows another defeat could end his own world title aspirations. .

Murray said today; "I thought Mitchell had bottled it once and for all when he turned down the opportunity to fight me last month, but I am glad he has finally put pen to paper as this fight has been a long time coming and, apart from the world title, this is the only meaningful challenge left for me in the UK."

Dagenham's Mitchell, himself a former British and Commonwealth Champion, said today; "Murray's done well but he hasn't faced me yet and, if he had, we wouldn't keep hearing about his unbeaten record, I was 31-0 too with more stoppages than him, until I lost out in my 32nd fight which he will too. Personally, I hope this fight takes place in the East End so I can show my legions of fans that last year was a one off an Kevin Mitchell is back.

The date, and the site of the fight will be announced soon and a sell-out is expected for the North v South showdown.

Promoter Frank Warren added; "Like DeGale V Groves this is another fantastic fight that I am so pleased to be able to stage this summer. Finally the big fights are being made and like the winner DeGale V Groves, the winner can look forward to a world title challenge in the new season. This is a real 50/50 match and I salute both guys for signing up for it. I am working on a date and venue for the show and hope to announce this and, of course, a top quality undercard very soon."

Who do you have taking this one?

I was pretty unimpressed with Murray's fight a few week's ago. Was a poor performance from him but do you think he can up his game to beat Mitchell?

Can see it depending on how Mitchell comes back from his knockout defeat. He may not be the same fighter after that, but if he does come back as strong as ever I think he will beat Murray..

Mitchell pts. Too quick & skilled for Murray and fought at higher level but don't think he'll have the power to stop him, can see him out-boxing him for 12 rnds.

Anyone know if there's a date / venue confirmed or lined up for this yet?

I'm going out on a limb and saying Mitchel by TKO late.

I think Murray just get caught far too often for my liking. Look at the swelling El Ouazghari managed to inflict, and his punches had no snap whatsoever. Mitchel certainly punches harder and faster than him. I cant see Murray getting KOed, but i do see it getting stopped for taking too much punishment late-on.

Of course, as already has been said, this is dependent on how Mitchel comes back from his loss. But I'm hopeful he will bounce back with a good win here.

I like Mitchell to redeem himself. Can't see him losing this one, he'll want to shut his critics for sure.

If a focused Mitchell turns up then he gets the win no doubt,if its the Mitchell from the Katz fight then i give Murray a good chance

Good on Frank for gettin this done!

Genuine 50/50 fight man, i think its anyones but if u really pressed for a prediction id say John Murray. He will be well up for a Mitchell fight, and Kev is coming in off a bad loss which for him isnt ideal. Kev also likes a tear up and thats not a good idea against a John. Sure he can box and did so against Prescott but he had to fear that power, Murray can dig but dont have that one punch power and Mitchell wont have that same fear, Murray is also easy to hit which May actually be a negative for Mitchell if he gets carried away and stays in to try and land an extra few shots.

                  This fight may not happen.

                  From Boxrec news:

                  http://news.boxrec.com/news/2011/kev...s-bust-reports
Kevin Mitchell arrested in drugs bust - reports

Promoter Frank Warren announced in his weekly 'Frankly Speaking' column on April 23rd that "I've managed to get another domestic super fight off the ground. European lightweight champion John Murray will take on former world title challenger Kevin Mitchell in the summer, probably in July. It's a great fight and I'm really excited about it."

What Warren surely couldn't have known was that, according to The Sun newspaper, more than a week earlier Mitchell had been arrested following an early morning raid on his family home.

According to the tabloid newspaper, "Mitchell and his mum have been nicked on su****ion of possessing ******* and running a cannabis farm. Mitchell, 26, was held during an 8am raid on his family home following a tip-off...Cops said a woman aged 51 and a man, 26, had been bailed until June 10."

The arrest is reported to have been made on April 15th.

This proposed fight has already been shelved once over 'politics' or money, depending on who one believes and it's hard to see how it can go ahead as scheduled now with Mitchell having such a serious matter hanging over his head.

John Murray recently moved to Warren. Having given up his European title in order to fight Mitchell (the EBU don't allow boxers coming off a defeat to challenge for their title and Mitchell hasn't boxed since losing to Michael Katsidis), this appears to be really bad news for the unlucky Mancunian.
