BOXING: FIGHTING FOR FANS
By Hugh Keevins
THE Scottish boxing public and Scott Harrison will go on trial when the world featherweight champion defends his title at the Braehead Arena on November 5.
Fireworks in the ring and an audience big enough to make the occasion go with a **** will be expected by Harrison's promoter Frank Warren.
Otherwise he could make sure that when Harrison has the mandatory defence of his title against Joan Guzman it will take place anywhere but Scotland.
The name of Harrison's warm-up opponent will be announced at a press conference on Monday but the size of crowd Warren wants to see has already been set at 5000, Braehead's capacity.
Commonwealth games silver medalist Amir Khan, now turned pro, will top the undercard on November 5.
A Warren associate said: "Khan has helped pull 6000-strong crowds in Bolton and Cardiff for his first two pro bouts.
"If the Braehead Arena isn't full to the brim on the night Harrison fights that will be considered a major disappointment and could cost Scotland the showdown with Guzman."
Harrison was moved out of Glasgow for his last title defence against Michael Brodie in Manchester's MEN Arena.
The spokesman added: "Every fight is important for him from now on. This one in Glasgow will go out live on ITV 1 and that is a fabulous showcase for any boxer.
"The TV date's become vacant as it was originally pencilled in for Joe Calzaghe and he's now out for weeks with a damaged hand.
"The fight with Guzman, if and when it goes ahead, will need to go to purse bids. Hopefully it will be able to be kept in Britain, particularly the Glasgow venue that houses Scott's fan base.
6000 fans? That figure does surprise me!
The Scottish fans have been burnt before by Harrison particularly the Kebede farce so how can they say they want the venue to be full to the brim when we don't even know the opponent yet
and if the opponent turns out to be **** then it's definitely not going to be a sell out & by the sounds of it this is a warm up for Guzman in the new year so I don't see this next guy being too demanding which means the venue won't sell out...even with Khan on the undercard!
