Light-heavyweight contender Nathan Cleverly (20-0, 10KO’s) has been dealt a blow after finding out that his Spanish opponent Alejandro Lakatos has withdrawn from their interim WBO title fight scheduled for this coming Saturday, citing a case of pneumonia.
In steps current EU champion Nadjib Mohammedi (23-1, 12KO’s) although the fight will still be for the interim championship. After the disappointment of being informed before his last fight against Karo Murat that it wouldn’t be for the title, Cleverly deserves his chance at the elite but he keeps suffering these setbacks.
Cleverly has been on hot streak lately and his stock is high, but a victory over Mohammedi wont do much to increase it, and with full WBO champion Jurgen Braehmer set to fight WBA beltholder Beibut Shumenov the title picture couldn’t be any murkier for Welshman Cleverly.
Nadjib Mohammedi is vastly less experienced than original opponent Lakatos, and has no wins over anybody of note. The only noticeable name on his record, Thierry Karl, stopped Mohammedi in just one round. He will do very well indeed to last the full twelve with Cleverly, but at such short notice Frank Warren must be praised for finding anyone at all to save the show.
