...concerning the upcoming robin reid/jeff lacy fight.

being the bloody american that i am, i've seen
exactly zero reid fights (but i've seen some hugh grant movies).

i could ofcourse google and get some info, but i'd like
to get some responses for you guys/gals.

what's the deal with reid? speed, power, chin, level of opposition,
all that good stuff. just curious what to expect, and wanted a some opinionated info on the guy's background.

feel free to throw in a prediction as well.

    cheers.

Reid's tough and has a great chin, he had a great fight with Calzaghe about 6 years ago and lost a VERY close decision which he still believes he won and not forgetting he is a former WBC champ himself, a good counter puncher with the right hand which is his main weapon for me but he's too lazy a lot of the time & just doesn't do enough work but if Lacy's pressuring as you'd think he will be forced to work and after seeing Lacy being rocked badly by Sheika don't be surprised if he walks onto one. I think Lacy will win a clear points decision however, Reid will be waiting for the right moment to counter and he'll get outworked in the process.

Reid's big fight was against Henry Wharton, that was his big win, and beating a fighter the calibre of Wharton was very impressive.. but that was seven ****ing years ago! Basically, Reid at his best beats Lacy but Reid loses to Lacy in the up-coming fight, the reason being because Reid was at his best seven or eight years ago and that's quite a while

As for Reid the fighter in terms of style and strengths, well he's an arm puncher with a sculptured body, quite an awkward arm puncher with a firm jab and a solid chin. He keeps his hips level and below his shoulders when moving forward. I don't really think you want to trade with Reid toe-to-toe, you want to get your jab working and hit him with one-two's before moving away and keeping on the move.

So if Lacy's a little on the confident side wants to stand in front of Reid, he's asking for trouble! But if he's a sensible lad and keeps Reid off him and takes Reid seriously, he'll win.

I give Reid a shout in this fight, former champ, only person to really take Calzaghe deep into the trenches in what was a great fight, I myself felt he won it. Lets not forget him being robbed in Germany 2 years ago at the hands of Ottke (who wasn't though) So on that he concievably lived with or beat (dependednt on which way you look at it) the two guys in the division who are/were undefeated. He is one of the unluckiest fighters around and could have/unlikely now will be a household name.

I take on the points Barryboy was making regarding his lazy attitude, this has been a problem but to be honest I think it has improved with his realisation that he is ebbing toward the end of his career and every second counts if he doesn't want to go down as a perenial under achiever. Skill wise, chin wise, boxing brain wise he can match Lacy, power no, workrate no - I do believe if he is at his best he can win though.

Yeah, I give Reid a shout too... But I think Reid is on a downwards slope.

5 or 6yrs ago I would have said Reid easily, but he's getting on a bit now... And he's not had the easiest career in the World!

Reid had a very controversial loss to Ottke. Referee was a disgrace. Reid was getting warned for punching. He got detucted points for nothing. Knocked Ottke down and it wasnt called a knock down. Reid should be WBA and IBF champ. Current IBO champ

Yeah... The Reid vs Ottke fight was the worst display of corruption and incompetence in sport I've ever seen!

Personally i dont see reid troubling Lacy too much, reids really getting on a bit now, maybe a few years ago he would have been a good match for someone like lacy. He niether has the class to outbox lacy or the power to have a puncher's chance

thanks for all the feedback lads.

one thing i must admit about lacy that i don't particularly like (tho i've only seen 6 of his fights so maybe i judging too hastily) is that he doesnt seem to have a plan in the ring. The fights i've seen him in he pretty much out-muscled they guys he fought and that was about it. The concept of "setting a guy up for a punch" never seemed to materialize. He looked like he was just winging shots and waiting for an opening for a ko.
don't get me wrong, i think he can be great, but i think a good boxer, someone who can think on their feet can beat lacy if they have the chin to take his shots.

personally i hope this Reid bloke (like my use of british colloquialism?) really tests lacy. the vanderpool fight showed a guy with a plan can give lacy some trouble with movement and potshots, along with some solid counters, but he needs to have some pop and a chin to acually pull it off.

i very much doubt he will KO Robin.
Great chin but whether he has the engine anymore to outwork Lacy i dunno.

Lacy had better watch for that big counter right hand though. Either Lacy points or Reid KO.

Its a 60-40 fight in favour of lacy in my opinion.
