Herol Cheats Death
SHEFFIELD boxing hero Herol 'Bomber' Graham told today of how he cheated death when his gym ceiling collapsed as he trained youngsters in the ring.
Former European Middleweight champion Bomber broke down in tears when he revealed how he almost died in the freak accident last night.
The 45-year-old dad-of-four, renowned as being the best British boxer never to win a world championship, said he was suffering from shock after the ordeal.
He told family and friends how a corner post in the ring saved his life when it took the impact from a large section of the roof, which just narrowly missed his head. "I am in complete shock and still can't believe it. I didn't think we would get out," he said.
The drama unfolded as Bomber, who runs Rotherham Boxing Centre on Masbrough Street, Rotherham, was training youngsters at around 7pm.
Fighters inside were showered with falling debris and Bomber ended up trapped under a ring post until he was dragged to safety by the father of one of his young boxers.
The room filled with choking black dust, leaving those inside struggling to breathe until somebody threw a piece of the ceiling debris through a window to let fresh air in.
Bomber's wife Nina, speaking from their Abbeydale Road South home in Sheffield, said he had never been so lucky.
Good to hear everyone's ok. The ceiling would need to be pretty slick to pin Bomber down
