New champion Ricky Burns eyes all-Scots showdown against Paul Appleby

THE first-ever world title fight between two Scots could be on following Ricky Burns' win over Rocky Martinez to take the WBO super-featherweight crown.
Promoter Frank Warren is considering making history by putting Burns up against South Queensferry boxer Paul Appleby, 23.
But the first thing Burns wants is his world title belt.
The Puerto Rican he defeated at the Kelvin Hall in an epic 12-rounder on Saturday night returned home with the belt as it remains his property.
Another will be specially made for the new champ and Burns will receive his in Manchester on September 18.
Warren will plot what happens after that.
He said: "Appleby impressed me when he won the British featherweight title. He was much younger then and lost a year out of his boxing life recently.
"Now he's very hungry, has time on his side and that there could be a huge, all Scottish fight somewhere down the line."
On his Martinez bout in Glasgow, Burns said: "I made the mistake of going square on in the first round and he hit me with a peach of a right hand to knock me down.
"As soon as he caught me I thought, 'what's going on here?' "But I showed the heart of a champion to get back up and go on and win the fight.
"He actually caught me a few times but I have a good chin and took the shots well, although I had to grit my teeth in every round."
Martinez had previously been unbeaten in 25 fights and Burns was a 5-1 underdog with the bookies before Saturday's fight.
But the 27-year-old from Coatbridge insists he never doubted he could move up in class. He said: "I've just sent out a big statement to everyone who doubted me throughout my career.
"I'm always confident in my own ability. The better the opponent in front of me, the better I am going to be.
"At times in the build-up to this fight it felt like just me and my camp thought I would win.
"But the boxing critics who said I would lose just spurred me on.
"I've wanted to a win world title since I was a wee boy and it is just an amazing feeling to have finally done it."

            Robbed for being Scots

Greenock's John Simpson was last night robbed of his Commonwealth featherweight title by a piece of bizarre judging that calls into question the whole way that such contests are decided.
In an extremely close fight, which admittedly could have gone either way, a Scottish judge awarded the fight to Simpson, but two English judges called it for compatriot Stephen Smith.

Scotland's Vic Loughlin called it 116-114 for Simpson, while BADVERTISEMENT

ill Edwards of England gave it to Smith by the same scoreline - that is understandable given the close nature of the fight.

But Ian John Lewis scored it 116-112 for Smith, a ridiculous scoreline from a judge who usually calls things much more accurately.

The failure by referee Phil O'Connor to punish Liverpool's Smith for excessive holding and hitting illegally also cost the Scot his championship and a chance to regain his British title.

The Scottish contingent in the Kelvin Hall could not believe the decision, and roundly booed and catcalled it for some time afterwards.

The Liverpudlians in the old place were ecstatic, but the home crowd shouted "cheat, cheat, cheat".

The simple fact is that two English judges gave it to the Englishman while the Scottish judge gave it to his compatriot. The case for at least one neutral judge from another Commonwealth country - Wales and Northern Ireland are nearby, after all - was never better made.

Just as happened when Simpson was disgracefully not awarded the British title when he clearly beat Dazzo Williams in England, the Scot should be at the centre of history again. For after that fight in 2004, the British Boxing Board of Control brought in three judges for all British titles.

Tony Jefferies (olympic bronz medalist) is fighting too i just noticed. Ill be pissed of if the Lindsay fight isnt on

Smith said after that it was either Lindsay or a rematch with Simpson. Think he said Lindsay was next but as Simpson as good enough to give him a fight when he didnt have to so he would fight him again. I hope to **** if he fights Lindsay its in belfast on a non-warren card.

Appleby isnt a great choice of opponent, he needs a decent win or 2 to get that shot. Warren said Arthur was more likely

Yep mate it said in the local paper today Simpson might be moving down to superbantamweight to give it a shot .Props to him man if he does he'll have to train harder but hopefully he makes the weight easy enough. Hopefully he'll be stronger .The scouser he was boxing posts on ESB man , Swifty .He said he'll give Simpson a rematch as soon as his hands healed .It said as well the winner was mandatory for Lindsay but it said on frankwarren tv Smith might need a couple of defences before he gets off the lead so Simpson could still get a shot Lindsay .See what happens mate Simpson's trainer posted and said he'd want a rematch .Fail on that move down to superbantamweight .Lindsay is probably the fight they want most still man .My guess anyway.
