Young Paul Appleby successfully defended his lonsdale title last night with a points victory over the more experienced Pickering. Paul pretty much won every round bar the 9th (imo) and although he was a clear winner he still wasnt happy with his performance. He seemed a little too eager to get the KO and at one point looked as though he might have punched himself out (9th) but it was back to full power the following round and ended the fight as strongly as he started it. The bodydhots coming from Appleby were imo the punched that dictated the fight and had he stepped back a bit more and picked his punches I reckon he could have forced the stoppage.
All in all a good win for the youngster from South Queensferry and considering it was only his 13th fight which he took as a voluntary I can only see things improving for him. There is plenty of time to iron out the creases and he still hasnt fully matured physically. Im looking forward to watching his career unfold.
