Bad management! Edwards should go. Wait for 2012 he says? LOL. Old fart probably thinks Olympics come every four months!

This situation looks suspect to me, what a mistake for someone at that level to make.

The lottery money invested in him could have gone to a good cause. Maybe he should be made to pay it back when hes making a fortune in the pro ranks.

Im just wondering if he failed some sort of internal drug test or something like that. Im sure someone who competes at that level would be able to cut 3 lb's with the time he had to do it.

You have a point but I think it is the fact hat Terry Edwards the ****head thinks drying out is a risk and he said so in that interview which is available on BBC. I think Gavin has been prevented from drying out because of the involvement of too many non boxing people in the camp. Them nutritionists and dieticians know **** all. They should have an old school trainer in charge of all of it who would deal with such situations with pragmatism, not pseudo-science.

I still think there is more to this than meets the eye, but if its not and it is just the coach not letting him dry out those few lbs he should look for a new career after the games.

What a huge tactical mistake to make at this sort of level this is a once in a lifetime chance for a fighter

I would be interested to hear the oppinions of some amatuer fighters or coaches on this situation

Edwards should go???? He's managed to ressurrect English amateur boxing from the grave, into a force to be reckoned with. Give the man a raise, I say!

I talked to Gavin at the EU championships in late June, where he fought at 64kg. He beat European Champ Boris Georgiev so easily, he made Georgiev look like a beginner. He also made Georgiev look small, physically.
The whole week, I never saw Gavin out of his sweatsuits, with a big overcoat, exceot when he was in the ring, or at the lunch hall. He told me he walks around at 73kg at home, and he had a hell of a time even getting to 64. Since then I've been predicting that he wouldn't be able to make weight (at boxrec.com's am forum). This is not a case of negligence by Edwards, not a case of Gavin having bad discipline. This is a case of a guy qualifying almost a full year before the Olympics, and simply growing out of his weight division. If there's one single factor to blame, it's the qualifying system.

You predicted Gavin might struggle to make weight on this forum as well.

Gavin must be more than a flash in the pan beating Georgiev easily. Makes it even more of a shame that he's got bigger.

Could be a very good pro if he can find some power.

Edwards doesn't deserve no praise, he has not done ****. It is the club coaches that made these men. He is just fortunate to be their to claim victory and is also lucky he has funding so is not dealing with part timers like his predecessors and many of his foreign competitors. The man should be sacked. He admitted he would not let him dry out the 3lbs for his own 'safety'. It's only a few ****ing pounds and only 4 rounds. Top pro's dry out up to 15lbs for 12 round fights! If it was more than 3lbs he should stay, bit if he wins no medals the he MUST go as that money (OUR money) would have been better put down the drain. Same applies for Sven so why not Edwards?
