Celtic Prizefighters
Deirdre Gogarty, a pure born and bred Celtic Prizefighter never even gets so much as a mention when Celtic Prizefighters are honored. Deirdre became Irelands first WOMEN'S UNDISPUTED WORLD BOXING CHAMPION when she defeated Bonnie Canino to win Canino's World Featherweight Title. Deirdre left her job as assistand head animator for the TEENAGE NINJA MUTANT TURTLES to come to the USA (women's boxing was illegal at the time in Ireland) and pursue her dream. Gogarty was offered up as an "opponent" for Christy Martin at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1995 on the Tyson v. Bruno undercard. This bout was like the "shot heard round the world" for women's boxing. Deirdre and Christy proved to the world that women could box at the highest level. The late Harry Mullan, then the editor of Boxing News wrote his only story on women's boxig and it was on the Gogarty v. Martin fight. Deirdre is now retired sits on the Louisiana State Boxing Commission (the only woman in history to be appointed to that commision), she also owns her own graphics company in Lafayette, Louisiana, Knockoput Graphics, which is highly successful. Gogarty made history as the first Irish women's champion, the first woman to be licensed to box in Louisiana, Ohio and Colorado and the first and only woman boxer to be honored as the SPORTS PERSON of the YEAR in Ireland. Deirdre has all the human qualities that we all hope to achieve, honesty, integrity, discipline, trust, dedication and her beautiful face is the map of IRELAND. For this fine CHAMPION to be forgotten when CELTIC PRIZEFIGHTERS are honored is a TRAVESTY!!!!!
