  • Canzoneri, armstrong, ambers, jenkins all ducked davey day

Tony Canzoneri wanted to fight Barney Ross a 3rd time, he was offered to sign two contracts, first to fight Davey Day, Barney's stablemate, and if he gets past Mr. Day, he can fight Barney, he turn it down. The Illinois Boxing Commission refused to recognize Canzoneri as the Lightweight Champion until he beats Mr. Day.

Mr. Day fought Lou Ambers in a non-title fight 1937, and pummeled Lou in the last three rounds, bell rang, saving him from KO. getting the referees nod. He was robbed. Mr. Day finished the fight unscathed.

Day fights Venturi, the winner was to fight Ambers for the Title, Day wins, and Lou fights Venturi instead. Lou and Armstrong both were offered $35,000 to fight Day in a re-match, neither wanted to fight him. Armstrong did beat Day, who was blind in one eye and just a squint out the other half the fight and was leading up until the 10th rd. The referee looked at Armstrong's bloody face and said you can rest now, in stopping the fight in the 12rd. TKO. Henry was damaged goods, took the worst beating of his life in his prime 1939. Oh, both combatants were lightweights in their welterweight match. Day was signed to fight the #1. Welterweight contender Pedro Montanez, with the winner to fight Armstrong for the title. Day severely cut a deep gash in Montanez eye, winning via TKO in the eight rd. Day won the fight unmarked.

Armstrong ducked Davey and fought Montanez instead,
who was served to him compliments of Mr. Day.

Go to Google search 'Davey Day nails Lou Ambers' read the history of Boxing and fighters, in the descriptions. also, the other pic. of Day getting off train to fight Montanez, has a complete informative narrative, with pic. news clippings. 'Davey Day vs. Henry Armstrong'.

The N.B.A. stripped Ambers of his Lightweight title for not fighting Davey Day 3/22/40. Davey became the designated, defending lightweight Champion. The NYSAC split with N.B.A. keeping Ambers as their version of the Title. The N.B.A. selected Sammy Angott #2 ranked fighter to be matched with Davey for the Title. Day previously fought Angott in a 12 round match and won. Angott won their first fight in 10 rds in which Davey suffered a broken hand.

The Championship match was originally scheduled for Chicago. Everything changed when Charlie Jones, Angotts manager and Johnson Mattingley, Chairman of the Kentucky Boxing Commission offered Pian & Winch $5000.00 to have the fight in Louisville on Derby Eve 5/3/1940.

The Louisville Set Up. The Ky. Boxing Commission shelved the Official Judges. In comes Jack Dempsey as the sole judge and referee, hired by (no less) Sammy Angotts own manager Honest Charlie Jones, who paid all Dempsey's expenses, plus his normal fee of $3,500 to $5000.00. to do a hatchet job on Davey.

Dempsey made Sammy Angott the Champion by one point in his calculation. A few months later, John Lardner sportswriter, mentioned Angott beat Day, under strict circumstances, when three guys blabbed. The clipping is in the information previously mentioned on google search.

No doubt. John Lardner, syndicated sports writer, NY Herald Tribune, quoted the following several months later.

"Sammy Angott who won the Title from Davey Day in Louisville in 1940 under circumstances of the strictest, secrecy, but secret got out when one of three witnesses blabbed."

If they wanted an honest referee, they should have called on Gene Tunney. Day's own managers were part and parcel to this fiasco. They robbed Ross and Tony Zale, Davey's stablemates. Day coined the phrase, "Pian & Winch , where
          Frank & Jessie James reincarnated."
