    Must watch boxing fights

    Hi all,

I’m predominantly a back-foot fighter and would like your ‘must watch’ fights which show off the work of a back foot fighter please?

I wouldn’t mind any ‘must watch’ fight recommendations to be honest, I was just thinking about studying in relation to my style.

    Thanks
    Fran!

    Welcome, Fran! Great thread!

    Pastrano-Johnson
    Monzon vs. Griffith 2
    Monzon vs. Valdez
    Graham-Gavilan
Pep-Saddler (any, even the ones where Saddler wins by fouling)
    Pep-Famechon
    Jofre-Harada
    Leonard-Hagler
    Buchanan-Ortiz
    Mayweather-Alvarez
    Tunney-Dempsey
    Loughran-Walker
    Loughran-Carnera
    Ali-Williams
    Whitaker-De La Hoya
    Canto-Gonzalez
    Spinks-Holmes
    Lewis vs. Mercer
    Robinson vs. Fullmer 2
    Walcott vs. Louis both
    Giardello vs. Carter
    Monroe vs. Hagler
    Toney vs. Jorov, McCallum, Rahman
    Kalambay vs Barkley
    Witherspoon vs. Holmes
    Holyfield vs. Bowe 2

That should be good for starters. A lot of those are iconic fights. Many feature the pure Boxer when he's NOT at his best, but still excels.

For pure savagery, in the early 80s Bobby Chacon, Bazooka Limon, Rolando Navarette, and Cornelius Boza-Edwards took turns trying to kill each other for the WBC 130 lb title. NONE were able to beat Arguello but their fights vs each other were pure action.

        - -Gene Tunney had a backfoot style to match the first edition Ali in the Dempsey fights.

Sadly, seemingly much of those two fights have deteriorated to the point of lost footage and marginal watchability unless some collector or his estate has a master copy squirreled away along with Harry Greb fights.

Another instructive backfoot watch is prime Ali vs Zora Folley for the mental aspect of the backfoot style.

Zola past prime never having fought for a title due to mob connections in the Patterson era. He was yet still respected as a dangerously crafty counterpuncher. Angelo knew all this to impart to the youthful Ali who had a lot of respect for fighters like Zora.

Ali gave up all the early rounds to run around feinting jabs to take measure of Zora reactions and timing. Midrounds he starts swooping hit and runs and finally puts Zora down enough to get the stoppage.

Yeah those are exactly the fights he does NOT want.

Though, mentioning Arguello: Olivsres and Fernandez 1 are good choices for what Fran is after.
