The Mercer of 1996-1998 was better than than 89-95 variant, in that he used a vastly underrated left jab to great effect, even against taller and more skilled athletic fights. THAT version of Mercer would have some degree of success against the Ali of the 1st Chuvalo encounter, although I'd still bet the farm Ali would shade him and take his wallet. Ali'd take 75% of the rounds and walk away with a comfortable decision.
