Buchanan had a lot of style, an excellent boxer. No punch was his biggest shortcoming.
Against Duran he finally, finally, finally had some success at the end of the 14th was it? When the bell rang he was not willing to stop punching. So Duran smashed him in the nuts. It really was that simple.
Laguna had the misfortune of sharing his prime with Carlos Ortiz, an absolute lock (IMO) for top 4 all-time at 135 and a top 3 fighter of the decade and then Buchanan had the misfortune of having to tackle Duran so quickly into his reign. Just too difficult to be on top for long back then but both are great fighters and stylists.
They made two very good fights against each other and Buchanan even got some quality work in post-Duran.
