  • Top 10 All-Time Flyweights

Full Disclosure, I kinda think lists are dumb. There's no way to prove who's better than who. We can look at two fighters and make very strong conjecture, but still never know. Add in 8 more fighters and things get even more muddled.

Still... it's fun. And it's a practical endeavor as it sheds light on various careers. With 200 years of Boxing history, even the absolute best can get lost in fog.

So, I think it's worth it to discuss the division that's almost died off and has long been the most neglected" Flyweight.

Along with Ray Robinson, Jimmy Wilde was the most consistently ranked man atop any of the original eight divisions. It was always Jimmy on grounds. It was gospel, Jimmy Wilde was the best "little man" ever. Looking at the footage, I'm not so sure. Maybe the most dangerous? Maybe the most wiley? Maybe the purest fighter? But Boxing has evolved in the many decades since. Not only do I think there are fighters with equally comparable records, I think there are fighters who might beat him.

This isn't necessarily the list that I stand by but it's a thought:

    Lynch
    Wolgast
    Chocolito
    Canto
    Perez
    Wilde
    LaBaraba
    Genaro
    Harada

I'm sure there's lots wrong there. But I'd love other thoughts.

Are we talking top-10 "greatest" (legacy) or "best" (H2H)?

If the former is the case, Jimmy Wilde takes it.

If we're talking about who beats who, Wilde may not even be in the top-10!

        - -If Wilde has to take on all the champs in a tourney, of course he'd take some losses as they all would.

So what? We can only evaluate fighters in their own era. The assumption that fighters are better now is erroneous . Many today would struggle with often horrific conditions that fights were held in and just the tiny more akin to bare knucked gloves used with no groin protector or gumshield. Most big American fights are indoors with Cushy climate controll over a measly 12 Rds with no smoking allowed.

You're right, of course… a boxer's "greatness" should be judged on how he did in his own era. If he beat the best in his own time, I don't see, how we can ask for anything more than that.

For example, 100 years from now, high-school sprinters may routinely go below Bolt's world records, as they stand today.

Does this mean, that in the 22nd century Bolt will no longer be considered a "great" athlete? Of course not! He was the outstanding track-and-fielder at the start of this century, and will always be remembered as such (at least I hope so!).

              - -And let us remember modern records have been set on enhanced modern tracks, shoes, and training not to mention PEDs that Bolt is often accused of due to lax standards in Jamaica.

              Bob Hayes!!!

No mention of Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson? H2H nobody beats him at 112

It was my favorite sport until your mom recruited me to help her get rid of her gag reflex. Funny thing is, I'm the one doing all the work!
