    Orlando Canizales: thoughts?

From Laredo Texas, won IBF bantamweight title and defended it for a record sixteen consecutive times. He was a pretty durable boxer.

My dad loved him because my dad spent some of his childhood in Laredo.

Great fighter, awesome skills, one of those fighter who can "hide in the pocket". Not as big as Lomachenko but similar in some ways and like Loma, a fan friendly, "once in a generation" boxer-puncher.

He was great! He definitely could hide in the pocket, then drop domes.

I’ll watch a few of his fights tonight.

Great clip. Canizales was like Duran, a guy that was born to fight.

That's exactly who he reminded me of, a mini-Duran.

Some of the most beautiful skills ever, but I think his mentality and/or stamina may've prevented him from being one of the all time greats. I don't really mean stamina in the traditional sense. He wasn't a guy that would be dominating a fight and then just gas out in the later rounds. He was more the guy who'd take rounds off, or large portions of rounds, randomly when it seemed like he had the fight in the bag. This could lead to some outings where the fight would end a lot closer than it should've been against clearly inferior opposition.

Part of that might've been down to mentality as well. He wasn't a mean, dirty fighter with a killer instinct the likes of more famous/accomplished fighters with similar skills like Duran or Gomez. Much more of an all business, polite boxer-puncher who took what was there.

Had he the mentality of a Gomez I think he could've been on par as a fighter with him. Again, the skills were all there. Some of the best footwork you're ever gonna see, exceptional punch variety, upper body and head movement, punching power, etc. Just lacked that certain fire.

Still, he made a very fine career for himself considering. One of my favorite fighters to watch and study from a technical perspective.

He had great power. How do you think he would have done against Donaire at bantam? Or Vic darchinian?

He did get a little complacent at times, and I’m not sure if he got gassed a little, or just got too comfortable, he did let a few guys clim back from some punishment, and a few fights were close.

This here is the definitive Orlando Canizales higlights.
                    Enjoy guys!

I always find the Duran comparison interesting...
I don't see it to be honest.

                    Canizales was a monster finisher.
But he set up his finishes with great boxing and counter punching.

Whenever I've shown people that highlight vid in the past I've noticed they always assume the guy was a pressure guy or a brawler. He wasn't.

His brother Gaby on the other hand.
I can certainly see the Duran comparison...
