Buddy is highly underrated. He fought about four weeks prior to the Taylor match, so he may have been over trained. Each time I've watched his first fight with Whitaker, I still have Buddy winning that fight. In the rematch he fought with one arm due to a shoulder injury. That's how good Buddy was, he could go the distance with a prime Whitaker with just one arm. He was a well-rounded boxer, the complete package.

Finally some smarts around here, Ghost of Dempsey, I always felt McGirt was the total Package, and your right he was overtrained, he had 5 fights in 13 months, that’s a lot of time making weight, anyone that boxed or wrestled knows that after awhile it’s a horrific grind physicals & mentaly.
Not much after the Taylor fight he moved up to WW and had a half dozen or so wins then beat the daylights out of Simon Brown. And I agree Dempsey I thought he beat Whitaker in that first bout, people should go watch that fight, That was Pernel at his best , ok That’s that

I would pick a "prime" Whitaker over both to be honest.

Yeah, I thought it was definitely an over-training situation. Buddy didn't look right from the get-go. Taylor was very talented but he would have had much more trouble from a healthy McGirt.

Do you think he could have pulled it out if healthy?

I think it would have been much closer and yes, I do. Could have gone Taylor's way as well, but it would have been much more difficult. We'll never know for sure unfortunately.

I just can't see it. Not sure why Buddy allowed himself to get so out of shape these days.

Red , Buddy has suffered from a Bad Thyroid disorder that has plaqued him for sometime now. I’ve met him a few times down in Atlantic City back when he was training Arturo Gatti at the end of his career, Buddy is a real class act, super nice guy.
His weight gain has kinda been out of his control. Tell ya he was a helluva fighter

But Ive noticed with most fighters, they get way out of shape in retirement. Only a few, like Hearns and Ray Leonard, remain slim.
