    BoxRec reliabilty?

Looking up records of yesterday’s fighters, BoxRec is invaluable.

But, in the past, visitors to the site at times have had their computers/phones infected.
It’s not a https/http-site. Various anti-virus programs also warn the site ain’t safe.

Anyone having had troubles recently after dropping in on BoxRec?

Ive had more than my fair share of issues with it. But I find they make a lot of mistakes on their records, especially old records and out of country.

I have found BoxRec to be invaluable as well -- I have not had any virus issues in two years of use, but we'll see.

I do have one compliant: BoxRec does not record 'bare knuckle fights.' I understand they have to draw a line somewhere, as to when the sport began, but they need to make an exception for John L. Sullivan, as of now their Sullivan page reads '******.'

With no bare knuckle fights listed for the Great John L. any viewer with a limited knowledge of the game will become very confused. They will not be able to understand how a man can lose the HW Championship without ever having won it; they might think that the Sullivan-Ryan fight in '86 (a MQB gloved fight) at Mechanics Pavilion San Francisco was where Sullivan won the title from Ryan (which he didn't); they will never know of the 75 rounds with Jake Kilrain.

In short, when it comes to John L. Sullivan, Wikipedia is a better source, and that should be embarrassing enough for BoxRec to fix their Sullivan page. But they haven't.

If you want to know the record of the Great John L. you have to use a different source.

The better source for John L. Sullivan is here at Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_L._Sullivan

This BoxRec source is actually an embarrassment Boxrec: http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/10547

Otherwise I haven't found any real mistakes, but I have run into what I believe are erroneous 'notes' regarding the fights. But that often falls under 'my opinion.'

Other than the Sullivan failure it is the best source around.

Until Fight Fax actually creates an online portal.

I seen them have the wrong result after a fight a lot.

Glad you mentioned 'bare knuckle fights'. The more I read and learn about the dinosaur era and its hardmen (i.e. pre-Sullivan), the more intriguing it gets.

Yes, I would love to see a database that listed results for all of the bareknuckle bouts

Boxrec is probably my favorite boxing site. But yea they got some sketchy ad system in place or w/e (not unlike this place seems to have every now & again) that leads to issues if you aren't using an adblocker. I usually only notice it on my phone where I don't got an adblocker.

The last 40-50 years seems pretty accurate. Not sure about the periods before then

Most of their issues are with overseas records, like Mexico, etc.
