Howard Davis was one of the greatest runners to ever appear in boxing, and a contender for the fastest mitts ever, but unfortunately he was a bit fragile for a boxer. In other words he was merely a normal human being when it came to durability. You have to be something special when it comes to durability, if you want to be a top boxer.

Me and Old Left are on the same page with Davis' durability issues.

You want to see that Perfect Right Hand Power in action, watch the Punch he hit's Aaron Pryor with in their 1st Fight, it literally bends Pryor's head straight back, it looks like the back of his head touches his back, Pryor had previously been put down, by at least 7 Bums and an Old Cervantes, Pryor never Fought anyone with Power, I believe Arguello was a bit over his Best weight, but he still should have at the very least put Pryor down with that Punch, but Pryor was on so much with that mixed bottle, he took it and acted as if nothing hit him and came charging into Arguello, NO WAY, I'm from Cincinnati, I saw at least 40% of Pryor's Amateur Fights, all but 1 Pro Fight and I trained for 4 years at his Gym in town, I got to know him and his crew, NO WAY he takes that punch and does not go down, and I say Knocked either out, or he gets up and then Arguello takes him out, but Lewis definitely had the best stuff that he knew would help him in that bottle, Pryor avoided any and all Power Guys, Dujuan Johnson had decent power was the best he faced in the power area, he ran from a crowded LW division to a crappy JWW division, he should have stayed, imagine Pryor vs. Arguello at LW, better for Alexis, also vs Mancini, yes Aaron is better, but with that crap chin, Ray has a decent shot, or Sean O'Grady, Jim Watt, Hilmer Kenty, or a Rematch with Howard Davis Jr., Gato Gonzalez, excellent Power, or even Andy Ganigan, of course Pryor outclassed him, but if Andy Hits him he is put to sleep, or Jimmy paul, he would KO Pryor, Edwin Rosario, he KO's Pryor, eventually Chavez and him could have fought, Bramble would have been a pretty good fight, Also at JWW Pryor avoided Sweet Saul Mamby, he was the other JWW Champ for years, they nver fought, Mamby had no power, but for several years there was an excellent Boxer as he dominated the JWW division opposite Pryor, Pryor Probably wins, but, also Benitez, his Defense would have allowed him to avoid the early onslaught and either TKO PRryor o win by UD, Hearns, Not even a fight, he wipes out Pryor the way he did Duran, in the Amateurs pryor had physically matured by the time they fought and Hearns was far from being the Hit man, and Pyror turned down a $750,000 offer from Duran as he moved up to WWW, Pryor and his camp never replied, so Duran moved up, Duran destroys Pryor, Leonard offered him money he turned it down wanting more, Leonard moved on, Leonard by TKO< KO OR Big UD.

I was an Arguello fan and when Pryor ate that right hand and didn't go down my heart sunk, I saw the writing on the wall.

Yes he was offered the fight in 1981 but pryor turned down the $750k purse even though his highest purse before that was only $300k and at the time pryor had not faced alexis arguello and was a champion who was stilll obscure.

OK I Googled it and ended up with a different story. I could find no Leonard offer in 1981 that Pryor turned down, but he did turn down (in 1981) an offer from Roberto Duran's people, (according to his own Wikipedia page.)

In regards to a $750,000 offer from Leonard I found two articles that claim the offer came in 1982. Both claim Leonard's eye injury nixed the fight.

                  Article I

I do not know if this is correct nor how much this individual actually knows (or who he is, if anyone).

                  https://www.************.com/2014/07...appened-twice/

"Aaron Pryor had no doubt chased a Sugar Ray Leonard fight and it actually was going to happen in Autumn 1982.It actually got to the point where Leonard-Pryor was the fight that TV and the paying public wanted was actually going to happen. Pryor had an initial offer of around $500k that his team negotiated up to $750k.

Sugar Ray Leonard took a warm up fight first against Roger Stafford. He detached his retina, fight off he retired briefly soon afterwards. Pryor never got the fight he craved more than any other the chance to meet Sugar Ray Leonard and the chance to really turn into the household name he should have been."

                  Article II

This is a quote from the New York Times, it also suggest that Pryor wanted the fight and that Leonard's eye injury nixed the fight not Pryor.

                  https://www.nytimes.com/1982/11/14/s...sugar-ray.html

''I signed the contract,'' Aaron Pryor recalled. ''I was going to get $750,000.''

But first, Sugar Ray Leonard had to retain his title against Roger Stafford in Buffalo on May 14. The Sunday before that bout, Aaron Pryor was driving to Buffalo from his Cincinnati home to taunt Sugar Ray Leonard, to hype their planned bout, when he heard on his car radio the news that the welterweight champion had needed surgery for a detached retina in his left eye.

''I pulled off to the side of the road,'' Aaron Pryor remembered, ''and I cried.''

He did but Pryor turned it down because he felt the money wasn't right.. However, later on Leonard and Pryor signed to fight but Leonard suffered a detached retina in a bout and the fight was off. There has been a lot of talk about Leonard ducking Pryor but it's just BS. Also Pryor sent an offer from Duran to fight. The timing was bad and it didn't happen either.

I sure do miss fighters like Arguello. What a class man and great champion.
                      Arguello is a true legend.

It always pisses me off he was cheated out of a world title by a drug cheat who had loaded gloves.
