Looking through some old fights and i had always wandered why this fight ended the way it did.
Was the 5 minute rule for low blows not in act at this time, I know the result was actually inevitable if it carried on but the ref seemed pretty quick to waive it off.

Did the ref actually see the low blow? I havent watched that in years but its great fight. But if ref thought it was legal blow and guy couldnt continue then thats why.

I believe it was out of view from the ref but the blow was thrown after the bell as well which confuses me more to why it was a duran win.

got ya. I would say since it wasnt low in refs eyes he just had one minute in between rounds to get right. I see what you are saying, theres been couple modern fights where challenger gets hit late, couldnt continue and other guy gets dq or just goes to nd. So yeah i dont have an answer for that haha. Bit before my time, although i love watching duran fights on youtube i not sure why in that day it was a duran win.

I guess if it wasn't a DQ it should have gone to the cards.

Duran was obviously better and outfought him but always felt for Buchanan that he never got his re-match. He was a great fighter and probably would have had a great reign in most different eras. Beautiful boxing skill.

I got same exact thoughts on this. Would have loved to see a rematch.

I watch the clip on YouTube and it looked at me that about a minute prior to the final event Duran got hit low twice by Buchanan. They weren't on the groin. Buchanan hit Duran after the bell first. The referee grabbed Duran from behind as the punch was delivered. Did he cause it to go low. It's hard to tell. I'm a huge Duran fan so I'm biased. Duran played rough all night for sure.... Ironically this incident and the No Mas would have ended any credibility of a lot of fighters but they just added to Duran's mystique.

I'm a big fan of Duran too. I look forward to watching this fight on Youtube. Even Buchanan admits, Duran was beating the snot out of him for most of the fight. So the "low blow" definitely wasn't the single event that won the fight.

No doubt Duran was winning the fight but the referee Johnny Lobianco's remarks to Dunphy were disgraceful, he maintained that a fighter could not be hurt wearing the "new" protector.
Just look at Buchanan's reaction when the punch landed. Duran should have had points deducted (a) for hitting after the bell and,(b) punching below the belt. No way borderline!
Buchanan then should have been given time to recover.
Don Dunphy, surprise, surprise, had nothing critical to say about the referee, big pal?
We have seen dozens of fights since when fighters have been given time to recover (wearing protectors!) for far less powerful blows South of the Border!
