I believe the NBA came into existence when it sanctioned the Dempsey-Carpentier fight; an act I believe Tex Rickard deliberately paid little to no attention to; it did work at times as a foil to the NYSAC.
The NBA tried to insert itself into the Dempsey-Wills dispute but got brushed off by Kearns and Rickard.
I agree by the 1960s neither Frazier (as NYSAC Champion) nor Elis as WBA Champion was going to be able to claim the title without a face off. I think crowning Frazier was the NYSAC's swan song. After that they went unnoticed.
