What a great fight and a vivid reminder of the depth of the heavyweight division in the 70's. Great toe to toe non-stop in-fighting action. Lyle was a strong, tough, hard hitting SOB with a ton of heart who just plain outlasted Shavers. Amazing to see Lyle all but KO'd in the 2nd round continue to stand and trade in close with Shavers. Great uppercuts from Lyle fighting off the ropes and great power right hands for the KO.
Early in this fight Shavers demonstrated a tight compact style, dipped well at the waist, had two handed power, was a busy infighter, mixed his attack and possessed decent handspeed. He was a better fighter technically than he is given credit for, often being portrayed as a crude one handed fighter which as this fight clearly shows he was not. His problem was always stamina.
you told the outcome before i watched it

Just recieved a PM reminding me of the lightweight division during the 80's, so in response I uploaded a good scrap from that time/division between Alexis Arguello & Andy Ganigan;

The first one to be given that title was the infamous fight in Sabbath's signature up there...Johnson vs. Jeffries. The second one was fought on March 8th, 1971, and featured a classic contest between a couple of undefeated heavyweights who both had some claim to the title of heavyweight champion of the world;

P.S. I'll get Marciano/Walcott I uploaded at some point in the next day or two, but it's a three part file that's going to take some time to get done...Be patient with that one, my friend.
