Lou Ambers was a great lightweight and not only was he one of the top lightweights of the 30's, I think a very strong case can be made for his inclusion among the top ten of all-time in this division.

I think he beat the great, Tony Canzoneri in two out of three, did he not? And he also split a pair of fights with who some would say was the greatest fighter of all-time, in Henry Armstrong. And he very nearly stopped Armstrong in their famous first fight, as his left jab did quite the number on Hank's face and bloodied him above the eye, and especially inside the mouth. That's the fight where Armstrong swallowed a ton of blood (and got sick afterwards) just so the referee wouldn't stop the fight against him.

Ambers wasn't the flashiest fighter you'll ever see, but he did have a very solid jab from the outside and was also quite adept at fighting on the inside with the hooks and uppercuts. But what Lou Ambers was above anything else was tough and he certainly had about as much heart as any fighter could possibly have.

He beat some of the greatest fighters of all-time and in his prime he lost to nothing but the very best (he lost to Armsrong, Canzoneri, McLarnin, and a couple of very solid and top contenders in Eddie Cool and Pedro Montanez).

Without a doubt, Lou Ambers was a great fighter!
