  • How many champions did Sugar Ray Robinson beat?

I've posted this on several forums now but no one's been able to find out, you guys are my last hope. On Boxrec's biography it says Robinson defeated 16 former, current, or future world champions. I have been able to find 15, but not 16. Can anyone find the 16th? I'm starting to think Boxrec's biography is wrong. My list so far:

champions defeated (in no particular order)

    1. Fritzie Zivic (World WW)
    2. Sammy Angott (World LW)
    3. Kid Gavilan (World WW)
    4. Henry Armstrong (World FW,LW,WW)
    5. Jake Lamotta (World MW)
    6. Randy Turpin (World MW)
    7. Rocky Graziano (NBA MW)
    8. Carl Oslon (World MW)
    9. Carmen Basilio (World WW,MW)
    10. Marty Servo (World WW)
    11. Gene Fullmer (World MW)
    12. Denny Moyer (WBC WBA World LMW)
    13. Ralph Dupas (WBC WBA World LMW)
    14. Izzy Jannazzo (Maryland version WW)
    15. Maxie Berger (Montreal Athletic Commission LWW)

Which just goes to show there was splittage back in the old days, as well. Today, the top dogs of all those soups would be recognized as champions, so why not include them in Robinson's list?

Maxie Berger was not a familiar name. That means your list is nicely extended. I wonder if there are more?

Another interesting take would be to add up how many fights he actually had with champions, since he faced most of these guys multiple times. He may have had more fights with champions than Ray Leonard had fights period.

If he fought today the number would be x4 because all the multiple titlists. However we should admit there is a difference between those undisputed champions and today's multiple titlists.

I don't believe there's a 16th champion to be found on SRR's record, that he defeated.

Berger was a surprise to me too! At first I thought, this had to be a mistake... but, sure enough, he can be found on BoxRec's list of JWW champions. In the old Ring Record Books he's not listed as such... not even in the "climant" category.

You missed Paul Pender, Joey Giardello, Joey Maxim and Tommy Bell.

Robinson faced 19 men who were, would become or had been champions, as far as I can make out. He had a total of 43 fights with such men.

Robinson defeated only Tommy Bell, of the additional champions I listed. He won the welterweight championship from Bell, and beat him once before either was champion.

Tommy Bell never held the title. His fight with SRR was for the vacant title

Okay, Bell has to come off the list, as Tom Cruise has pointed out.

Make that 41 fights altogether with men who were, had been, or would become champions, then. Robinson only faced 18 champions instead of 19.

                  * Wouldn't class Jannazzo or Berger as World Champions.

The question was how many world champions Robinson beat - and he didn't beat Pender, Giardello or Maxim.
