    Chinny-Chin-Chin

Tonight's fight between Hurd and Harrison illustrated perfectly a boxing principle I have held for a long time, every since I noticed that virtually every all time great has a great chin.

Obviously chin cannot do it by itself and no one is making such a silly statement. A great boxer has to have many other great qualities, but the one assest that stops men from entering the revered ranks of ATG's is chin. Unless the chin is of high quality all meteoric rises in boxing end the same.

If you do not have chin it almost does not matter what else you do have. That is why I have always considered chin the most important asset of a boxer when it comes to climbing to the top. It is even harder to ascend the all time heap than one's generation. There, virtually every boxer has a sterling chin.

All time greats without a sterling chin are practically an unknown commodity. Roy Jones with less than sterling was so quick no one could ever catch him to test the chin until everyone started KOing him.

My assumption has always been that in the all time arena the other contestants are good enough to catch anyone and test their chin.

ATG lists do have an overwhelming amount of great chins.

The only thing that I can say is that some guys have the rare combination of being chinny yet their lights never go out, they have inhuman recovery. Such as Joe Louis, Juan Manuel Marquez, Archie Moore etc.

I see Thomas Hearns mentioned, he's one of the only ATG's who didn't have any of this. But then again everyone always says that if it wasn't for his chin he could have been one of if not the GOAT in boxing. So the old man makes a good point with this thread.

Tommy is the "other," one. Now even if Tommy had the chin of Hagler I figure he would still be need the stamina of Hagler to be the GOAT.

I was planning to make a thread about it.
I believe the new Sugar Ray Robinson probably existed some years ago, but he didn't had the chin to reach even the national title.
I believe that professional boxers have the best chins in the world and that's why you see small boxers beating huge people in the street and that's why pro boxers can take the huge amount of power their opponents can generate.

Having a less than average chin cost Hearns big time. If Hearns would have had a good chin he would be in the conversation 0f TBE. Other than a great chin, Hearns has every other quality, in abundance!
