carnera was nothing but a side show, baer was unskiled and wild and could be picked apart pretty easily, braddock was a lucky journeyman, conn was a lhw.
Sonny Liston was old and a drug addict, Patterson was a former middleweght and past his best days, Williams had been gutshot and was shot, Foreman was crude and could be picked apart pretty easily as Baer...and was by feather-fisted Jimmy Young, Norton was nothing spectacular till he beat Ali and Muhammad never dominated him in the rematches...some say he lost the third, Frazier was never the same after the first Ali fight, was bounced 6 times by Forman and Ali still fought life an death to beat him in Manila, Bugner was nothing special but Ali couldn't stop him, Spinks had 8 fights and wooped Ali's ass, etc., etc.

Skill alone does not make a great champion. Louis had skill but he had much more than that. He had heart and he had desire. He held the heavyweight crown with class and brought 2 races together that had been extremely segregated before.
Guys can pick and poke about Louis' tough fights. He had trouble with this guy and was not able to dispose of this guy.... Whatever man. The man stood atop the heavyweight division fendiong off whatever challenges he may have had in front of him.
Everybody will have torubles with different fighters through their careers. It is the true champions that find a way to make it work and then go out and do it. No champion has had a clear paved way to stroll down with their title in the fight game. Louis had some bumps in the road, but in the end it was his arm that was raised in victory.
Ahhh...he's too young to remember Osbourne, Iommi, Butler, Ward. Birmingham's fantastic four...
