  • Gianfranco Rosi

Guess who is fighting today (Saturday April 29) and has won fights in 4 decades? I doubt that you would have guessed it, Gianfranco Rosi:

The guy is 48 years old and has won his last 3 fights, although against weak opposition to say the least. He was an outstanding boxer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I remember his fights against "Schoolboy" Van Horn and Donald Curry. Those from England might remember his fight with Lloyd Honeyghan. I haven't the slightest idea why he's fighting now, but I thought maybe a few readers would be as bemused as I was to see his name on the fight card:

Of course several others have won fights in 4 decades including these that quickly come to mind:

    George Foreman (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s)
    Archie Moore (1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s)
    Larry Holmes (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s)
    Tommy Hearns (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s)

In order to have fought in 4 decades you had to have a career spanning at least 20 years. Few have done this. Any more you can think of?

    Found another 1: Bob Fitzsimmons:

Ruby Robert had 2 fights in 1914 although neither went to a decision.

    Found another: Joe Bugner (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s)
Bugner was darn close to fighting in 5 decades. He had a fight in 1999.

    Found 10 more:

    Tim Witherspoon (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s)
    Greg Page (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s)
    Earnie Shavers (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s)
    Tommy Farr (1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s)
    George Benton (1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s)
    Young Corbett III (1910s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s)
    Jack Britton (1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 1930s)
    Joe "old bones" Brown (1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s)
    Benny Bass (1910s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s)
    Phil Zwick (1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s)

    Hit the "jack"pot! : Jack Johnson (1890s, 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 1930s)

I'll be darned! I didn't know that he fought into the 1930s and still was winning fights.

Can you believe who I forgot?
    Roberto Duran (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s)
That's 5 solid decades with very few fishy fights against tomato cans. This is the most impressive feat of boxing lengevity on record if I may say so.

    Rosi won

old Gianfranco Rosi beat his opponent, a guy who wasn't born yet when Rosi had his 1st pro fight:

Although Rosi's win is some sort of achievement, the IBF Mediterraneo Middleweight Title must be 1 of the most worthless titles in boxing today. At least Rosi won decisively:

Referee: Raffaele Argiolas | Judge: Matteo Fratini 117-111 | Judge: Miklos Döry 119-109 | Judge: Luciano Tagliamonte 118-110
