Yes and such was his his ability and stature in the sport that his son, with considerably less talent, has become one of the top draws and earners in the sport.

The first thing that most people notice about Chavez is his record. Any guy that wins over a hundred bouts certainly seems like an excellent fighter.

I saw a handful of his high-profile bouts and I was impressed. He was definitely one of the better fighters of his generation.

Precisely how many of his opponents were genuine contests (i.e. the result wasn't cast in stone) I've no idea. I really don't know enough about the finer details of his career.

One thing I will say (and I know I'll be bombarded with rotten fruit for doing so) is that I appear to be one of a the very few people who think Chavez deserved the Whittaker fight.

I can understand why people are so mad about the ref stopping the fight with so little time on the clock. But Whittaker was taking terrible punishment. Given his condition at the time the decision was made it wouldn't have taken too many more punches to kill him. Was this the LIKELY outcome - no. But in such circumstances I'd much prefer the referee to err on the side of caution. There have been too many fatalities in the ring. Not to mention the countless cases of brain damage and other disorders.

You obviously have made a mistake here and mean the Meldrick Taylor fight. No way did Chavez deserve to win the Whitaker fight..

                ****** to even question this.

Of course he was a great fighter. You don't even have to look at his resume, just look at the FILM. He was a ****ing monster on the inside, a murderous body puncher with a great work rate. Also had legitimate boxing skills which people tend to forget, there was definitely some craft in what he did. If you want to see Chavez at his best check out his fight against Rosario. Rosario a very explosive puncher himself

Wins over Meldrick Taylor, Jose Luis Ramirez, Terrence Ali, Rocky Lockridge, Lopez, Rosario, Haugen, Laporte, Ruben Castillo, Roger Maweather, etc. He has a very deep resume in edition to the obvious "eye test". Also was unbeaten for a long long time, even if people think Whitaker beat him that is a very long period of time to go on such a streak.

Chavez to me is the GOAT Mexican ATG, with Olivares, Saldivar and Sanchez following.
